The abstract description is as follows: Current evidence highlights improved outcomes in heart centers operating multidisciplinary cardiogenic shock (CS) programs, including dedicated CS-Program Teams (CSPT). Despite its benefits, CSPT implementation across Canada remains limited due to systemic and human factor barriers. We assessed the implementa...
The clavipectoral fascial plane block (CPB) is an excellent alternative to general anesthesia
techniques given its efficacy and ease of performance and administration. Our case highlights
a 40-year-old male involved in a motor vehicle accident that resulted in polytrauma. The
patient underwent an open reduction and internal fixation for a displaced...
Background
In this study we evaluated our ability to implement team-based cardiogenic shock (CS-Team), focussing on: 1) early screening; 2) CS-Team activation; and 3) use of invasive monitoring to guide therapy.
Methods
All patients admitted to the coronary care unit (CCU) over 12 months were screened for CS. A diagnosis of CS was made when both h...
Study design:
Prospective cohort study.
Objective:
Investigate the impact of thoracolumbar surgery on patients' psychosocial profiles.
Methods:
A prospective cohort study of thoracolumbar surgery patients (N = 177). Measures of interest collected at baseline and 24-months after surgery were: modified Oswestry Disability Index (mODI), Numerical...
Study Design
Prospective cohort study.
Objectives
To identify patient trajectories of recovery defined by change in health-related quality of life (HRQOL) following surgery for adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS). To explore possible predictors of trajectory membership.
Methods
Adolescent patients scheduled to undergo spinal fusion for AIS were...
OBJECTIVE
Anterior cervical discectomy and fusion (ACDF) is often described as the gold standard surgical technique for cervical spondylotic radiculopathy. Although outcomes are considered favorable, there is little prognostic evidence to guide patient selection for ACDF. This study aimed to 1) describe the 24-month postoperative trajectories of ar...
This retrospective study of prospectively collected data aimed to identify unique pain and disability trajectories in patients following lumbar discectomy surgery. Patients of this study population presented chiefly with lumbar radiculopathy and underwent discectomy surgery from thirteen sites enrolled in the CSORN registry. Outcome variables of in...
Background: Current literature provides little consensus on universal guidelines for first-line treatment of chronic subdural hematomas (cSDH). However, administration of local tissue plasminogen activator (tPA) may enhance the traditional method of twist drill drainage (TDD). The study aims to explore the efficacy of TDD with and without tPA, at a...
Background: A subset of patients experience poor outcomes following anterior cervical discectomy and fusion (ACDF). Our study aimed to identify postoperative trajectories of disability, neck/arm pain and determine baseline measures that predict subgroup membership. Methods: Patients with cervical spondylotic radiculopathy undergoing ACDF are presen...
BACKGROUND
Unilateral agenesis of a cervical pedicle is a known rare entity that has been well described over the past 70 years. It is usually an incidental or minimally symptomatic presentation with no significant clinical repercussion. No previous report has described concurrent non-osseous developmental abnormalities alongside this unique pathol...
BACKGROUND
Chance fractures are unstable due to horizontal extension of the injury, disrupting all three columns of the vertebra. Since being first described in 1948, Chance fractures have been commonly found at a single level near the thoracolumbar junction. Noncontiguous double-level Chance fractures that result from a single traumatic event are...

However, administration of local tissue plasminogen activator (tPA) may enhance the traditional method of twist drill drainage (TDD). Study Design
Retrospective cohort.
Objectives
To compare outcomes of minimally invasive surgery (MIS) vs open surgery (OPEN) for lumbar spinal stenosis (LSS) in patients with diabetes.
Methods
Patients with diabetes who underwent spinal decompression alone or with fusion for LSS within the Canadian Spine Outcomes and Research Network (CSORN) data...
As advancements continue to reach, biomechanical and mechanical engineering are increasingly intersecting with spine surgery to improve patient care. By now, most have heard of 3D printing technology. 3D printing has wide potential in MISS and the increasing demand for MISS makes this a relevant topic to be discussed.
Scientific journalism clearly and accurately published is a fundamental to facilitate dissemination and reproducibility of results. It is the key in communication science to the public1. However, readability of scientific articles is steadily decreasing2. Lower readability implies less accessibility2. Less accessibility creates problems when `scien...
Universal health care means equal access to medical services for all Canadians, regardless of race, ethnicity, religion, gender or sex. It has been observed over the years that access may not be as simple as that or guaranteed for certain groups. It has often times been reported that people of lower socioeconomic means do not have the same access t...
Background:
Percutaneous stabilization for spinal trauma confers less blood loss, reduces postoperative pain, and is less invasive than open stabilization and fusion. The current standard of care includes instrumentation removal.
Objective:
1. Reporting patient outcomes following minimally invasive posterior percutaneous pedicle screw-rod stabil...
The aim of this study was to elucidate which baseline psychological measures add to the prediction of patient-reported outcomes 2 years after thoracolumbar surgery.
A total of 60.3% of the sample achieved a MCID for ODI 2 years after surgery. The final regression model for ODI included baseline MCS, ODI score and CPAQ Pain Willingness with the mode...
The aim of this study was to provide a preliminary investigation into the opioid prescribing patterns of spine surgeons in Canada. An anonymous online survey (SurveyMonkey) was distributed by email to the Canadian Spine Society membership, a total of 179 orthopedic surgeons, neurosurgeons and affiliates. The survey included 10 questions: there were...
