Maritime transportation forecasts project an increase in shipping. In this context, interactions with cetaceans are of growing concern especially when relevant biological data are not available to monitor the impacts. The Agoa sanctuary in the Wider Caribbean region faces this situation. To overcome this issue, we used AIS data to estimate three pr...
The morphodynamic functioning of the Sillon de Talbert gravel barrier spit is analyzed using a high‐frequency survey carried out between September 2012 and December 2019. It is based on beach profile measurements along two transects, modeling offshore wave data (WW3), tide gauge records, and shallow waves and water levels recorded in the intertidal...
Our contribution intends to describe an example of collaborations between scientific actors and actors of the territory, within the framework of a so-called participatory research. With the so-called “citizen” and “community” science, participatory research is one of the forms of collaboration between the academic and non-academic spheres. It invol...
Applications for analyzing AIS data and interactively geovisualizing data
Relevant data are needed to carry out the EU’s maritime spatial planning program (MSP). Since maritime activities involve spatiotemporal interactions of conflict or of synergy, knowledge of them is indispensable; but obtaining the relevant data is a sensitive question. This o...
Sustainable management of marine and coastal environments implies having a realistic and dynamic knowledge of human activities, particularly in marine protected areas (MPAs). Coastal recreational activities are difficult to monitor due to the diversity of practices involved, and to the fact that the population concerned is often highly mobile. Rece...
Although the importance of Maritime Spatial Planning (MSP) as a concept is know acknowledged and the legal framework is in place, the task of applying it remains a delicate one. One of the keys to success is having pertinent data. Knowing how maritime uses unfold in a spatio-temporal context, and what conflicting or synergistic interactions exist b...

High resolution estimates of bottom towed fishing gears are needed to provide relevant
information for natural resource management, impact assessment and maritime spatial planning. The use
of satellite-based vessel monitoring system (VMS) data is constrained by...
Estimates of the spatial distribution and intensity of fishing activity are necessary to provide relevant information for natural resources management, impact assessment and for maritime spatial planning. However, considering the need for a multi-scale approach, the access to such high-resolution information still remains a challenge. This research...

This contribution addresses both the role of geographical information in participatory research of coastal zones, and its potential to bridge the gap between research and coastal zone management. Over a one year period, heterogeneous data (spatial, temporal, qualitative and quantitative) were obtained which included the process of interviews, stori...
When it comes to characterize the distribution of ‘things’ observed spatially and identified by their geometries and attributes, the Shannon entropy has been widely used in different domains such as ecology, regional sciences, epidemiology and image analysis. In particular, recent research has taken into account the spatial patterns derived from to...

This contribution deals with the role of geographical information in participatory research concerning coastal zones and its potential to bridge the gap between research and coastal zone management. The study aims at modeling the interactions between human activities in a maritime basin. A methodology is proposed to describe the spatio-temporal dis...
Coastal seas are important for human societies with many and diverse activities. These space and resource consuming activities exert an increasing pressure on the environment and sometimes result in conflicting interactions. Understanding these interactions remains a challenge for research and civil society. A methodology is proposed to describe th...
The aim of this paper is to compare different maintenance costs of ecosystem service arising from a hypothetical case of environmental damage in order to help to understand how the different ecosystem services are considered in decision making processes. Compensatory measures are aimed precisely at maintaining the level of supply of ecosystem servi...

This contribution presents the methodology of data acquisition concerning human activities in the Bay of Brest (Brittany, France). The objective is to model potential conflicts and potential impacts on renewable resources. A survey method was developed to collect spatial data from stakeholders using GIS as a mediation tool. Thirty-nine semi-structu...

The main objective of WindServ project is to reconcile the “biocentric” view aiming the conservation of biodiversity while ignoring the human welfare with the “anthropocentric” view that targets the long-term
human development and this by taking advantage of the rise of offshore wind farms (OWF).
