Purpose
Most studies on surgical activity recognition utilizing artificial intelligence (AI) have focused mainly on recognizing one type of activity from small and mono-centric surgical video datasets. It remains speculative whether those models would generalize to other centers.
Methods
In this work, we introduce a large multi-centric multi-activ...
Formalizing surgical activities as triplets of the used instruments, actions performed, and target anatomies is becoming a gold standard approach for surgical activity modeling. The benefit is that this formalization helps to obtain a more detailed understanding of tool-tissue interaction which can be used to develop better Artificial Intelligence...
Automatic recognition of fine-grained surgical activities, called steps, is a challenging but crucial task for intelligent intra-operative computer assistance. The development of current vision-based activity recognition methods relies heavily on a high volume of manually annotated data. This data is difficult and time-consuming to generate and req...
Purpose:
Automatic recognition of surgical activities from intraoperative surgical videos is crucial for developing intelligent support systems for computer-assisted interventions. Current state-of-the-art recognition methods are based on deep learning where data augmentation has shown the potential to improve the generalization of these methods....
Context-aware decision support in the operating room can foster surgical safety and efficiency by leveraging real-time feedback from surgical workflow analysis. Most existing works recognize surgical activities at a coarse-grained level, such as phases, steps or events, leaving out fine-grained interaction details about the surgical activity; yet t...
Background
Visualization of key anatomical landmarks is required during surgical Trans Abdominal Pre Peritoneal repair (TAPP) of inguinal hernia. The Critical View of the MyoPectineal Orifice (CVMPO) was proposed to ensure correct dissection. An artificial intelligence (AI) system that automatically validates the presence of key and marks during th...

Background The 2015 Lancet Commission on global surgery identified surgery and anaesthesia as indispensable parts of holistic health-care systems. However, COVID-19 exposed the fragility of planned surgical services around the world, which have also been neglected in pandemic recovery planning. This study aimed to develop and validate a novel index...

Background
Phase and step annotation in surgical videos is a prerequisite for surgical scene understanding and for downstream tasks like intraoperative feedback or assistance. However, most ontologies are applied on small monocentric datasets and lack external validation. To overcome these limitations an ontology for phases and steps of laparoscopi...

Out of all existing frameworks for surgical workflow analysis in endoscopic videos, action triplet recognition stands out as the only one aiming to provide truly fine-grained and comprehensive information on surgical activities. This information, presented as 〈instrument, verb, target〉 combinations, is highly challenging to be accurately identified...
SARS-CoV-2 has been associated with an increased rate of venous thromboembolism in critically ill patients.Since surgical patients are already at higher risk of venous thromboembolism than general populations, thisstudy aimed to determine if patients with peri-operative or prior SARS-CoV-2 were at further increased risk ofvenous thromboembolism. We...

Background: The growing interest in analysis of surgical video through machine learning has led to increased research efforts; however, common methods of annotating video data are lacking. There is a need to establish recommendations on the annotation of surgical video data to enable assessment of algorithms and multi-institutional collaboration. M...
Peri-operative SARS-CoV-2 infection increases postoperative mortality. The aim of this study was to determine the optimal duration of planned delay before surgery in patients who have had SARS-CoV-2 infection. This international, multicentre, prospective cohort study included patients undergoing elective or emergency surgery during October 2020. Su...

Multiple primary tumors are uncommon in patients with squamous cell esophageal cancer. Conventional imaging methods have limitations in detecting those tumors. Although 18-F-fluoro-deoxyglucose-positron emission tomography scanner increases the detection of multiple synchronous tumors in patients with other malignancies, its contribution in patient...
Recognition of surgical activity is an essential component to develop context-aware decision support for the operating room. In this work, we tackle the recognition of fine-grained activities, modeled as action triplets ⟨instrument, verb, target⟩ representing the tool activity. To this end, we introduce a new laparoscopic dataset, CholecT40, consisti...

Image-guided surgery is growing in importance with each year. Various imaging technologies are used. The objective of this study was to test whether a new mixed reality navigation system (MRNS) improved percutaneous punctures. This system allowed to clearly visualize the needle tip, needle orientation, US probe and puncture target simultaneously wi...
BACKGROUND: Global health systems are shifting toward value-based health care to improve patient outcomes in the face of rising health care costs. The challenge is to identify standardized outcome measurements that allow optimal quality-of-care monitoring and comparison to optimize medical practices and patient pathways. A common outcomes definitio...
Radiomics is an emerging field which extracts quantitative radiology data from medical images and explores their correlation with clinical outcomes in a non-invasive manner. This review aims to assess whether radiomics is a useful and reproducible method for clinical management of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) by reviewing the strengths and weakne...

Background
Gastroparesis is a rapidly increasing problem with sometimes devastating consequences. While surgical treatments, particularly laparoscopic pyloroplasty, have recently gained popularity, they require general anesthesia, advanced skills, and can lead to leaks. Peroral pyloromyotomy is a less invasive alternative; however, this technique i...

Diagnosing and treating patients with GERD is complicated. 30% of patients still have chronic GERD symptoms despite taking médications. PPI treatment, when taken long-term have been shown to have significant side effects and may interfere with other medication. The diagnostic methods in GERD are not completely ideal. That is why I would like to know your opinion about what is the real need in care of patients with GERD.
