This paper presents a comparison between the Integrated Function Modelling framework and SysML with the aim of deriving specific potentials for cross-fertilisation and further improvement regarding their application for function modelling in interdisciplinary design. The presented comparison comprises literature reviews as well as the practical app...
Conference Paper
Increasing customer demands, especially regarding functionality, safety and environmental sustainability, are major drivers of nowadays product development processes. Those increasing demands as well as today’s product development context of distributed interdisciplinary development teams lead to an increasing complexity of systems as well as their...
Conference Paper
Validation is the central activity in product engineering and a means to gain knowledge about a System-in-Development. Especially for ADAS – Advanced Driver Assistance Systems, validation is of particular importance to ensure driving safety and driving comfort. Complexity and connectivity of modern mechatronic systems like ADAS demand for new, mode...
Conference Paper
Validation reveals differences between created objects and their objectives. The increasing number of mechatronic systems drives the interdisciplinary approach of Systems Engineering for product development and thus also validation. Complexity and scale of the individual subsystems of a system may increase to such an extent, that the system can be...

Industry 4.0 offers great potentials for improving production systems and processes, as well as the product itself regarding quality and time-to-market. The majority of research in the context of Industry 4.0 focuses on typical production topics like reducing waste, increasing flexibility or increasing lead times. The focus in this work however, li...
Conference Paper
Abstract— A large share of resources in product engineering is occupied by engineering changes. High complexity of networked advanced systems is an important cause. In order to cope with high complexity, Model-Based Systems Engineering is seen as a possible approach. The Advanced Engineering Change Impact Approach – AECIA presents a model-based Eng...

The specification of requirements and tests are crucial activities in automotive development projects. However, due to the increasing complexity of automotive systems, practitioners fail to specify requirements and tests for distributed and evolving systems with complex interactions when following traditional development processes. To address this...
Conference Paper
Model-based approaches such as Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) are widely regarded as a necessity to enable and support the development of ever more complex Systems of Systems (SoS). A key to the application of model-based development approaches in companies is the introduction of systems engineering architecture frameworks (SEAF) to structu...
Conference Paper
In order to cope with the complexity in modern product development and still being able to develop products with high potential for innovation, MBSE-Model-Based Systems Engineering is seen as a promising approach. However, despite envisioned benefits, MBSE still lacks acceptance in practice. In this contribution, we derive ten fields of action to a...
Conference Paper
The crucial factor for a successful usage of modeling approaches of systems engineering is the interaction of language, method, and tool. For this, specific challenges arise for the application of MBSE in agile requirements engineering. From observations in agile development practice at a machine tool manufacturer, the challenges for model-based re...

Growing cost pressure forces companies to actively manage their product costs to secure profitability. Here, manufacturing cost estimation within product development estimates manufacturing and material costs. As most products are developed in generations, needed product and manufacturing information can origin from reference system elements (RSE),...

More and more companies in the field of mechatronic system development are becoming interested in agile working. Although this topic has been researched for a long time, there are still problems with the introduction of agility. In this paper, a failed introduction of Scrum in a large German company is reviewed. For the investigation and analysis o...
Conference Paper
Stakeholder demand for an ever-wider range of functions combined with increasing quality requirements, higher reliability, shorter product lifecycles and attractive pricing leads to increasing product complexity. At the same time, the products build on existing systems with verified requirements. By means of a targeted requirements management inclu...

Conference Paper
Ever-increasing individualization of products with a constantly increasing range of functions and, at the same time, ever shorter product life cycles characterize product development processes nowadays. This increases the complexity of product development and places new demands on the development of suitable production systems. At the same time, di...

The assessment of risks and influences of engineering changes of a product or production system on affected technical (sub-) systems of the same or a different domain are of great importance in order to evaluate possible alternatives and to select solutions. The increasing complexity of mechatronic products and production systems with Industry 4.0...

Model-Based Systems Engineering Ansätze zur integrierten Entwicklung von Produkt und Produktionssystem im Kontext von Industrie 4.0
Conference Paper

Shorter product lifecycles lead not only to faster time-to-market for products but also to the need for just as fast available associated production systems. These shorter product lifecycles, as well as the increasing individualization of products, also result in further decreasing production lot sizes. Young companies in China in particular are ch...
Conference Paper
Although many companies today are aware of the proven benefits of MBSE methods e.g. on the sector of coping with complex systems, they still tend to limit the use of MBSE to areas where no real alternatives exist [AL12]. Reasons for such a strategy are quite simple. Document centered approaches have been successful in the past, but tend to be too p...

Conference Paper
Product validation at an early development stage plays a key role in meeting customer requirements and ultimately securing a product's market success. At the same time, early validation activities are subject to specific challenges resulting from a high degree of uncertainty. A promising approach to meet these challenges is the use of augmented rea...

Project
In the BMBF project MoSyS, the engineering of complex system of systems (SoS) is being researched - a SoS is a network of independent technical systems that cooperate with each other depending on time and location. For this purpose, new methods (e.g. agility), tools (e.g. solution kits) and IT tools (e.g. AI assistants) for an innovative advanced systems engineering are being developed and tested in industry.
Project
The objective of the research project I4TP is the development of a software-supported, model-based German-Chinese factory automation platform for the fast and simple conception and commissioning of turnkey production systems with integrated product consulting and the creation of tailor-made business models.
