Despite being of debatable efficacy, alternative medicines are in regular use on both organic and conventional dairy farms as part of a strategy for limiting the on-farm use of antibiotics. The study presented here examined French dairy farmers' understanding of and experiences with these medicines, focusing on homeopathy, aromatherapy and phytothe...

Organic livestock farmers are looking to improve animal health via alternative global approaches that focus on prevention. Feeding management is one of the main factors influencing herd health. This fact was the basis for the Obsalim (R) method, which was developed by a veterinarian and which relies on detailed observations of livestock. Here, we s...

Rural landscapes containing dense hedgerow networks and permanent grassland have diminished in France, as a result of agricultural intensification and homogenization. These relatively extensively managed habitats are considered important for biodiversity conservation and the current "green and blue ecological network" policy aims to conserve and re...

Many farmers are engaged in activities that can be considered as experiments, but until recently few of their practices were studied. This paper offers a first characterization of experiments by dairy, pig and poultry farmers working in organic, labelled or conventional systems. Data (40 interviews) were collected during an interdisciplinary resear...

There is a scientific debate on impacts of private stakeholders increase in agricultural extension services. Some social scientists consider that concurrence goes against investment in new techniques. However, in the past many agricultural innovationshave been promoted by private stakeholders, for example in organic farming and conservation agricult...

Reducing vulnerability to hazards is a major challenge for pastoral settlements in the dry lands of sub-Saharan Africa. Accumulation of a stock of living animals is a major means of livelihood security that pastoralists use to cope with their constraints, amongst which is high environmental variability. Diversification and long-distance mobility ar...

Project
Objectives Despite the many known advantages of grassland diversity (in terms of flora at the plot and forage system levels) for the agro-ecological transition of ruminant farms, the one concerning animal health is the subject of many questions from farmers and advisors. In response, the objectives of this project are : (i) To characterise the animal health value of grasslands (plot) on the basis of the content of secondary metabolite compounds as a function of floristic diversity, vegetative stage and conservation (silage and hay); (ii) To understand how farmers conceive and implement the role of grassland diversity (plot and forage system) in feeding, welfare, health and animal robustness, and build with them indicators for managing this diversity on the basis of the project results.
