GDP is not a perfect measure of well-being, and development has other aspects beyond economic growth. This is why there are other approaches to the welfare of an economy such as the Human Development Index (HDI) or Gross National Happiness (GNH).
On the one hand the dependence of GDP to indicate welfare of an economy and growth is becoming an outdated concept, but on the other hand iterature is abundant of the term “growth”, besides the concept of socio-economic development.
I just wonder if we can model socio-economic development by using a growth model and a development index. I know there are some "unnamed" assumptions behind the growth models and they may not allow us to do that. Is there a way?
There are many growth models and they focus on economic output. However, we know that development has some other aspects. I am trying to build a multi-dimensional approach including both social and economic variebles. I constructed a regional devleopment index and I want to use it as "socio-economic output of regions" and construct a model for development which includes the role of public policy. I just wonder if someone encounters a theoretical model for multi-dimensional socio-economic development.
I will be really glad if you could direct me to correct references.
