With the growth of the knowledge-based economy, intellectual property right (IPR) is recognized as a key factor to develop and protect the strategic competitiveness and innovation of an enterprise. Patents are used to encourage and protect inventions and to stimulate commercial development complying with legal IPRs. Due to growing number of patents...
Article
Patents are critical intangible assets for enabling an enterprise's creation and technology. Patent knowledge management is a time consuming task that often dominates the valuable time of R&D staff. This research develops an intelligent recommendation methodology and system for efficient and effective patent search. The system provides an algorithm...
Article
Enterprises evaluate intellectual property rights and the quality of patent documents in order to develop innovative products and discover state-of-the-art technology trends. The product technologies covered by patent claims are protected by law, and the quality of the patent insures against infringement by competitors while increasing the worth of...
Article
Full-text available
Many companies rely on patent engineers to search patent documents and offer recommendations and advice to R&D engineers. Given the increasing number of patent documents filed each year, new means to effectively and efficiently identify and manage technology specific patent documents are required. This research applies a back-propagation artificial...
Article
Full-text available
Patent documents are unique external sources of information that reveal the core technology underlying new inventions. Patents also serve as a strategic data source that can be mined to discover state-of-the-art technical development and subsequently help guide R&D investments. This research incorporates an ontology schema to extract and represent...

Nowadays many companies rely on patent engineers to search patent documents and offer recommendation and advice to R&D engineers. Given the great number of patent documents, new means to effectively and efficiently identify and manage the technology-specific patent documents are required. This research applies back-propagation artificial neural net...
Article
Full-text available
Engineering and research teams often develop new products and technologies by referring to inventions described in patent databases. Efficient patent analysis builds R&D knowledge, reduces new product development time, increases market success, and reduces potential patent infringement. Thus, it is beneficial to automatically and systematically ext...

Patent documents are an ample source of innovative, technical and commercial knowledge. Thus patent analysis has been considered a useful vehicle for R&D management and knowledge sharing. However, the number of patents in recent years has expanded noticeably. It is a challenge to interpret the knowledge contents and their relationship between paten...
Conference Paper
In recent years, many technical disciplines systematically develop standardized ontology that domain experts agree upon and apply to share and annotate information in their fields. The formal ontological representation facilitates R&D knowledge sharing and re-use by both knowledge workers and application systems. In this research, a system engineer...
Chapter
With the rapid increase of patent documents, patent analysis becomes an important issue for creating innovative products and reducing time-to-market. A critical task for R&D groups is the analysis of existing patents and the synthesis of existing product knowledge. In order to increase knowledge visibility and sharing among R&D groups, a conconcurr...
