ABSTRACT : ARFAN (Areal RainFall Analyses) is a code to facilitate fixed-time step rainfall time-series analysis. From point series, it estimates areal time-series over a given catchment using Thiessen polygons. We implemented two methods, including one where the polygons are recalculated whenever necessary, to exclude raingauges with missing data....

The application of the GEMAPI ("Management of aquatic lands and flood prevention") skill in France calls to solutions aiming at reconciling flood prevention and integrated management of aquatic lands. Nature-based solutions, based on healthy, resilient, functional and diversified ecosystems for answering the effects of global change, such as climat...
Chapter
This chapter insists that assessing the effect of several nature-oriented actions on flood risk reduction is far more difficult that assessing one large structure. Furthermore, the efficiency is case-dependent (catchment features, number and location of structures) and flood-dependent (intensity, duration and spatial distribution of the rainfall)....

Probabilistic flood hazard assessment are usually carried out through juxtaposed reach-wise hydraulic simulations, using as input “representative” hydrographs for the studied return periods - at least by their peak discharge. However, reach-wise approaches have drawbacks, especially in the presence of natural or man-made singularities. An approach...

In order to map extreme floods (return period as high as 500 or 1000 years) for which the discharges are uncertain, it appears cost effective to use a simplified method in order to obtain estimations of water levels. Generally, maps of the 100-year flood or an equivalent historical flood are available. The method presented here exploits the informa...

For sustainable and integrated flood management, small actions in the hillslopes and non-structural measures appear interesting, either to diminish the need for large flood mitigation infrastructures (whether sewerage networks or hydraulic structures in the river – which may have severe impact on the river ecosystems), or as complementary to these...

The analysis of flood exposure at a national scale for the French insurance market must combine the generation of a probabilistic event set of all possible (but which have not yet occurred) flood situations with hazard and damage modeling. In this study, hazard and damage models are calibrated on a 1995–2010 historical event set, both for hazard re...

The analysis of flood exposure at a national scale for the French insurance market must combine the generation of a probabilistic event set of all possible but not yet occurred flood situations with hazard and damage modeling. In this study, hazard and damage models are calibrated on a 1995-2012 historical event set, both for hazard results (river...

The contradictory demands of managers (quick relevant operational responses) and ecologists (need time for in-depth research) involved in freshwater biomonitoring are still relevant today. To contribute to solving this dilemma, we are proposing a novel biomonitoring approach, which among many others, could be used in this field and further develope...

When involved late in flood mitigation projects, biologists can suggest only minor changes. Conception should be multidisciplinary from the start. Riverscapes appear an excellent support to exchange information and share common conceptual views. Biologists thus summarize their expertise and local analyses, including a description of the potential b...

We investigate the assessment of the overall efficiency of a set of dry dams on flood mitigation. To ensure the spatial consistence of our flood scenarios, we used a stochastic rainfall simulator to generate rainfall fields representative of the climatology of a 150 km² catchment near Lyon. The influence of the variability and spatial structure of...
Article
If involved late in flood mitigation projects, biologists can suggest only minor changes - a fortiori after the computations are completed. We advocate that conception should be multidisciplinary from the early stages, to ensure a better compromise with biodiversity preservation. Therefore, specialists need to efficiently exchange information and s...

We formulated five proposals to improve specifications of flood hazard reduction projects and five proposals to preserve the river ecosystem functions, based on literature and authors’ experience. Starting from these, we established a conceptual approach using the notion of riverscape, with related function richness and bioassessment tools. We defi...

In order to protect the areas against the effects of flood and drought, we need to slow down the outflow in the scale of the whole catchment. The stream- and river-training are one of many possibilities of floods and droughts mitigation. However, these activiteies were often done without any respect of the basic principles of keeping the eocologica...

Structural measures must be designed at the right spatial scale, and in a coordinate manner, lest the works simply transfer the problems from one area to another. Upstream retention by dry dams is therefore interesting ; moreover, they do not hinder the river natural dynamics. The aim of this study is to test and improve a methodology to design dam...

Integrated Flood Management at catchment scale is the current paradigm. Dynamic Flood Retention is a relevant principle for its requirements, by mitigating floods wherever suitable opportunities exist on the catchment. It reduces the need for protection measures which impair river ecosystems, like levees and river training. This paper advocates the...

The interaction between the main channel and floodplains is one of the interesting challenge topics in hydraulics of open channels. This knowledge can be useful for flood control purposes, if altering the land-uses. The aims of this paper are: (1) to investigate the effects of floodplain Roughened Strips for reducing and delaying flood peaks, (2) t...

Hydraulic works and land-use changes usually induce an acceleration of runoff throughout the catchment, which can locally enhance erosion, damage riverine ecosystems and worsen floods. The "Dynamic Slow Down" concept (noted hereafter "DSD") therefore promotes slowing down, using transverse obstacles or small retention works. DSD also encourages ove...

In this paper, the Sentinel method is applied to groundwater pollution parameter identification. First, the inverse problem is solved in the linear case to estimate pollutant mass flow rates. Then, the non-linear case, which is the determination of the pollutant source coordinates, is developed. Finally, numerical tests, conducted on the Rhenan aqu...

Floods which have recently occurred, especially in the Upper Vistula Catchment showed that the major damages were caused by flooding by small torrents and rivers. Important losses appeared in the areas beyond riverbeds as result of slope erosion and landslides. Therefore, the attempts to slowdown the outflow at the beginning of it creation, seem to...

Protection of dispersed zones of interest against flooding inside a watershed needs careful consideration. Uncoordinated flood defence strategies render certain areas vulnerable while assuring protection to a given zone. Hence decentralised flood mitigation measures are solicited. By definition dry dams are ideal structures which attenuate flood pe...

Flood management has to undergo changes in order to meet the present societal needs. At watershed scale, zones of human activities are found dispersed and logically any protection measure needs to be oriented for the entire area. Retention of excess flow volume locally and consequent discharge into the watercourse is a good management plan for a ho...
