Introduction
My key interest lies in the conceptualization and usability evaluation of automotive interfaces, currently mostly for L3 and L4 automation systems. Besides, the evaluation of ADAS and IVIS from a Human Factors perspective (i. e. controllability & usability) are a work focus.
I work mostly with various driving simulators in that protoypical systems are implemented with the aim to conduct empirical user studies. For benchmark tests we conduct user studies in real traffic or on test tracks.

According to standards such as ISO 26262, system controllability for human drivers must be ensured with new driver assistance systems. The choice of an appropriate research environment is a central issue in controllability research and precedes questions such as the criticality of test scenarios and deduction of pass-fail-criteria. The methodologic...
This study investigated driver performance during system limits of partially automated driving. Using a motionbased driving simulator, drivers encountered different situations in which a partially automated vehicle could no longer safely keep the lateral guidance. Drivers were distracted by a non-driving related task on a touch display or driving w...
Different motor vehicle manufacturers have recently introduced assistance systems that are capable of both longitudinal and lateral vehicle control, while the driver still has to be able to take over the vehicle control at all times (so-called Partial Automation). While these systems usually allow hands-free driving only for short time periods (e.g...
Increasingly complex in-vehicle information systems (IVIS) have become available in the automotive vehicle interior. To ensure usability and safety of use while driving, the distraction potential of system-associated tasks is most often analyzed during the development process, either by employing empirical or analytical methods, with both families...
The choice of an appropriate research environment is a fundamental issue for research on advanced driver assistance system controllability which precedes questions regarding the criticality of test scenarios and the deduction of pass-fail-criteria. The methodological trade-off between research on test tracks and driving simulation cannot be resolve...
When highly automated driving is realized, the role of the driver will change dramatically. Drivers will even be able to sleep during the drive. However, when awaking from sleep, drivers often experience sleep inertia, meaning they are feeling groggy and are impaired in their driving performance―which can be an issue with the concept of dual-mode v...
The investigation of drivers’ take-over performance when switching from working on different non-driving related tasks (NDRTs) while driving with a conditionally automated driving function (SAE L3) is an important human factors topic in current vehicle automation research, as drivers are required as a potential fallback during the automated drive....
Objective: This study aimed at investigating the driver’s takeover performance when switching from working on different non–driving related tasks (NDRTs) while driving with a conditionally automated driving function (SAE L3), which was simulated by a Wizard of Oz vehicle, to manual vehicle control under naturalistic driving conditions.
Background:...
Introduction
Within the next years, vehicles will be capable of taking over the driving task in certain environments without the need to be continuously monitored by the user. This so-called conditionally automated driving (L3-automation according to SAE J3016 [1]), unlike highly or fully automated driving, still will require the user as a fallbac...
Background: Until the level of full vehicle automation is reached, users of vehicle automation systems will be required to take over manual control of the vehicle occasionally and stay fallback-ready to some extent during the drive. Both, drowsiness caused by inactivity and the engagement in distracting non-driving related tasks (NDRTs) such as ent...

Vehicle manufacturers have introduced second-level automation systems that are capable of both longitudinal and lateral vehicle control, but the driver has to be able to take over the vehicle control at all times. To emphasise this, these partial automation systems usually allow hands-free driving only for short time periods (e.g. 10 s). In a dynam...
Driver assistance systems that are capable of taking over both longitudinal and lateral vehicle control have been
recently introduced to the market. All of these systems allow drivers to take off their hands for a limited amount of
time, but also require drivers to be able to take over vehicle control at all times and can therefore be classified as...
Vehicle automation will be introduced stepwise to the consumer market. On an initial level, it is likely that these functions are going to operate only within a limited velocity range or only in a limited number of use cases (e.g., in traffic jams). Consequently, the frequency of state transitions to lower levels of vehicle automation as well as th...
The present study focuses on steering interventions that “push” the driver’s vehicle away from the obstacle suddenly entering the vehicle’s trajectory from the side of the road (e.g. a cyclist or a car leaving a parking space). The main objective was to investigate the effectiveness of the different intervention strategies while considering safety-o...
Building on assumptions derived from evolutionary theory, we investigated viewers’ reactions to the design of car fronts (i.e., an automobile’s face), which were designed to be threatening using basic principles of anthropomorphism. Previous research suggests two opposite human reactions when presented with threatening stimuli: Initially, threateni...
Analysis of eye-tracking data in marketing research has traditionally relied upon regions of interest (ROIs) methodology or the use of heatmaps. Clear disadvantages exist for both methods. Addressing this gap, the current research applies spatiotemporal scan statistics to the analysis and visualization of eye tracking data. Results of a sample expe...
Eye tracking has traditionally relied on regions of interest as a data source for analysis. Although widespread, this methodology is prone to several limitations. A new approach for eye tracking data analysis relying on spatiotemporal scan statistics is proposed and an exemplary experiment on anthropomorphic car front design is conducted.
