Background: The use of coercive measures is an increasingly debated aspect of psychiatric treatment. Considering the multitude of negative effects, patients, clinicians, and ethicists alike have called for a more cautious application of coercion. It therefore remains important to investigate which organizational characteristics have the potential t...
Background: The outbreak of COVID-19 in 2020 presented a major challenge to mental health care. Due to the risk of infection and the restrictions during the lockdown, outpatient treatment services were scaled down. This may have been particularly challenging for patients with Personality Disorders (PD), for which a stable outpatient treatment setti...
Liebe Leserinnen, liebe Leser,
Often, after an inpatient stay, early readmission occurs, which is detrimental to the patient. University Psychiatric Clinics Basel developed a 3-month transitional intervention program to bridge inpatient and community treatment by supporting people after their discharge from the psychiatric hospital. In line with international guidelines, this tr...
BACKGROUND
Open-door policies are recommended to reduce coercion in psychiatric wards, but evidence integrating patient perspectives on psychiatric facility openness and safety measures is limited. Traditional qualitative frameworks often lack the scope necessary to fully capture these views. We hypothesized that patients would express a preference...
Spezialisierte Fort...

Background
Acute crises in patients with personality disorders (PD) are often accompanied by suicidal and self-harming behavior. Their management is challenging, as both coercive measures and prolonged inpatient-treatment are known to be counterproductive. Only in crises that cannot be controlled by outpatient means, inpatient treatment is to be ta...

We commend Hempeler et al. (2024) on their important manuscript outlining a context-sensitive and patient-centered model for informal coercion in mental healthcare. Indeed, in clinical experience and in accordance with the literature, subjectively perceived pressure and coercion are most relevant to the patients (2019). While the authors explore so...
Prior research shows that locked doors and coercive measures are not only applied due to safety concerns, but also due to the specific local tradition of an institution. We examined the association of the use of coercive measures and the admission to a locked ward with person-related characteristics compared to the admission to a specific clinic. I...

There is no multi-country/multi-language study testing a-priori multivariable associations between non-modifiable/modifiable factors and validated wellbeing/multidimensional mental health outcomes before/during the COVID-19 pandemic. Moreover, studies during COVID-19 pandemic generally do not report on representative/weighted non-probability sample...
Introduction: Clinical High Risk for Psychosis (CHR) states are associated with an increased risk of transition to psychosis. However, the predictive value of CHR screening interviews is dependent on pretest risk enrichment in referred patients. This poses a major obstacle to CHR outreach campaigns since they invariably lead to risk dilution throug...
