Introduction
As an economist, I have been working extensively in the field of environmental economics and, in particular, in the quantitative economic assessment of non-market and intangible economic goods, services and risks (e.g. biodiversity, climate change, noise, agrochemicals). Currently, I am applying my skills to lay the groundwork for an upcoming "yoga economy". My specific intent now is to study the transnational phenomenon of "modern yoga" considering it an economic asset.

In this short paper I am discussing the idea of building sensitivity in yoga-asana practice on the basis of the concept of sensory afferance and mirror neurons.
This brochure presents the summary of the results of the study of "The Cost of Policy Inaction (COPI): The case of not meeting the 2010 biodiversity target". In the context of the environment, the cost of policy inaction is defined as: the environmental damage occurring in the absence of additional policy or policy revision. Inaction not only refer...
This paper aims to analyse empirically the intricate relationship between urban sprawl and commuting, a process that started a few decades ago in Italy. Using a mobility impact index based on commuting data for 1981 and 1991, we quantify the impact of commuting for seven major Italian urban areas, comprising in total 739 municipalities (communes)....
This paper presents a bottom-up methodological framework for estimating some of the key ecosystem services provided by forests biomes worldwide. We consider the provision of wood and non-wood forest products, recreation and passive use, and the forests’ contribution to climate regulation in terms of carbon sequestration capacity. The valuation fram...
Integrated assessment is rapidly developing in the scientific as well as policy community. Different methods, techniques and procedures (i.e., tools) are used in these assessments. Often, the choice for using certain tools in an assessment is not well founded. This paper presents a framework that scientifically underpins the role of, and thus choic...
This paper seeks to offer a systematic overview of methods and techniques for environmental quality degradation, with a particular view to the management of agricultural risk, against the background of policy relevance. The paper argues that modern valuation methods from ecological economics can play an important role in advancing transparent polic...
By using ad hoc value transfer protocols, this paper offers a methodological contribution and provides accurate per hectare estimates of the economic value of some selected ecosystem services for all forest biomes in the world, identified following the Millennium Ecosystem Assessment taxonomy MEA. The research also estimates potential total economi...
The widespread use of pesticides in agriculture shows a complex ramification of multiple negative externalities, ranging from food safety-related effects to the deterioration of farmland ecosystems. Recent research has demonstrated that the assessment of the economic implications of such negative processes is fraught with many uncertainties. This p...
We review the empirical valuation literature on pesticide risk exposure and develop a taxonomy of environmental and human health risks associated with pesticide usage. Meta-analysis is then used to investigate the variation in willingness to pay (WTP) estimates for reduced pesticide risk exposure. Our findings show that the WTP for reduced risk exp...
By filling the gaps in research, the studies described in this thesis focus on a number of open policy issues in the context of urban and rural environments. With a retrospective look at the process of economic valuation and its integration within environmental decision making, this thesis brings us from the theory to the empirics of valuation, in...
ABSTRACT On the current political agenda, which is characterized by a major effort to
minimize environmental transport externalities, the railway is considered an important
sector for policy intervention. For example, when compared with road transportation, the
railway is associated with lower levels of air pollution emissions, lower risks of fatal...

We perform an ex-ante evaluation of rural development policy measures (within the EU Common Agricultural Policy) that can be applied to peri-urban areas in order to preserve heritage and to prevent further urbanisation. Specifically, we evaluate four policy instruments comparatively and against the do-nothing alternative by means of an original com...
A sound empirical and quantitative analysis on the relationship between different patterns of urban expansion and the environmental or social costs of mobility is rare, and the few studies available provide at best a qualitative discussion of these issues. Some recent tentative studies on the metropolitan area of Milan have empirically explored whe...
Pesticide use in agriculture poses several risks to both human health and nontarget agro-ecosystems. Due to lack of information on the monetary value of reducing pesticide risks, it is difficult to perform an economic analysis that addresses social efficiency of policy and draws conclusions about the appropriate degree of regulation. The aim of the...
Sound empirical and quantitative analysis on the relationship between different patterns of urban expansion and environmental or social costs of mobility are still very rare in Europe and the few studies available provide only a qualitative discussion on this. Recently, Camagni et al. (2002) have performed an empirical analysis on the metropolitan...
The widespread use of pesticides in agriculture provides a particularly complex pattern of multidimensional negative side-effects, ranging from food safety related effects to the deterioration of farmland ecosystems. The assessment of the economic implications of such negative processes is fraught with many uncertainties. This paper presents result...
The use of environmental policy instruments such as eco-labelling and pesticide taxes should preferably be based on disaggregate estimates of the individuals’ willingness to pay (WTP) for pesticide risk reductions. We review the empirical valuation literature dealing with pesticide risk exposure and develop a taxonomy of environmental and human hea...
In the search for effective pesticide risk management tools, the design of pesticide risk indicators is nowadays receiving increasing attention as a complement to more established regulatory strategies. In the present paper, we apply some recently developed pesticide risk indices and test their potential for management purposes. A pilot approach is...
The research agendas of psychologists and economists now have several overlaps, with behavioural economics providing theoretical and experimental study of the relationship between behaviour and choice, and hedonic psychology discussing appropriate measures of outcomes of choice in terms of overall utility or life satisfaction. Here we model the rel...
Curriculum models’ features represent a strategic device to create a balance between academic education and the market demand of environmental labour. This article gives an overview of the experience of the Faculty of Environmental Science at the University of Milano-Bicocca. Considering the employment status of the first graduates of the faculty i...
