We investigate the temporal and kinematic properties of consonant gemination and heterosyllabic clusters as opposed to singletons and tautosyllabic clusters in Italian. The data show that the singleton versus geminate contrast is conveyed by specific kinematic properties in addition to systematic durational differences in both the consonantal and v...

This paper investigates how argument structure constructions (see e.g. Goldberg 1995) are used by Italian newspapers to portray gender-based violence (GBV), how their usage affects responsibility attribution to perpetrators, and how such usage is perceived by Italian readers. The assumption is that constructions critically affect meaning: construct...

What are speech data? The question is not as trivial as it may seem: every day both theoretical and applied linguistic research come up against problems deriving from bad data management. Whereas sociophonetic of production has received great attention, less is known on how variation in speech is processed and, if and how, this variation brings social meaning. For example, it is not obvious that variation, that we observe in production, is significant to the hearers, and, moreover, little is known on the quantity of variation that w...

According to recent studies, the lexicon-phonetics interface governs the acoustic and articulatory realization of sounds as a function of the lexical and statistical properties of the words containing them. Word frequency, lexical neighborhood density, existence of specific lexical neighbors – all influence the way in which sounds are produced, e.g...

The aryepiglottic folds are situated at the top of the epilaryngeal tube and are known for their capacity to generate both phonatory voicing sources and articulatory constrictions. High-speed laryngography has shown that aryepiglottic trilling involves an oscillatory movement largely independent of glottal vibrations, its frequency ranging between...

In the particular sociolinguistic context of South Tyrol, acquiring and teaching a language different from the L1 are linked to different factors: the other language (i.e., German or Italian) is taught as L2 since the beginning of school, but, on the other hand, for many pupils this “other” language becomes a sort of LS, since there are very few oc...

Project
The project's general purpose is to collect histories of migration in the Alpine area of Biella (Italy) from different migrants through the last century. The project has 3 main aims: 1) preserving the memory of the migratory process in this area; 2) educating schoolchildren about the importance of preserving memory as well as their heritage languages; 3) creating a longitudinal corpus up to sociolinguistic (and sociophonetic) investigations of children's speech in both spontaneous and controlled tasks. The project has been financed for 2018 and 2019 by Regione Piemonte and Regione Autonoma della Sardegna, via the cultural association "Su Nuraghe" of Biella and the "Museo delle migrazioni, cammini e storie di popoli" of Pettinengo (BI).
Project
The project aims at investigating the acoustic cues of the speech of hearing impaired adult speakers with different prothesis and acoustic problems. The data compared speech productions in two conditions: with and without effects.
