This study was designed to investigate the compounds in the different types of commercial aroma used to attract swiftlets in the birdhouse. Analysis of the volatile compounds is done on two types of commercial aroma, which is categorized as floor aroma (F1, F2, F3) and top aroma (T1, T2, T3) using SPME-GC-MS. As a result, F1, F2 and F3 shows the pr...

Agarwood (Gaharu) is highly valueddue to extensive usage in industries including perfumery, pharmaceutical and traditional medicine. The strong and unique woody aroma of agarwood oil is dependent on the abundance of sesquiterpenoid or oxygenated sesquiterpene. Post-treatment of agarwood oil such as exposure towards heat, UV light and oxygen under c...

The environment is an invaluable gift. In an era of progress, economic activities and development projects are often carried out to improve living standards and keep pace with other developed countries. However, this activity has had a negative impact on the environment because some parties still fail to control the disposal of waste that can cause...

Aquilaria hirta is one of the agarwood tree species in Malaysia that produces a unique resinous wood and essential oil used in perfumery, medicinal, cosmetic and religious ceremonies. Currently, it has been listed as vulnerable (VU) and threatenad species in the IUCN Red List. This study aims to characterise the morphology of A. hirta via scanning...

In this paper, the potential of oil palm frond (OPF) juice as an alternative and renewable carbon source to replace the function of glucose to produce volatile compounds by Ceratocystis fimbriata will be reported. The OPF juice was extracted using simple physical separation method. The growths of fungi were monitored by using cell dry weight (CDW)...

Oil palm frond (OPF) juice has been known as a good source of sugars to replace commercial sugars to produce methyl 3-(3,5-di-tert-butyl-4-hydroxyphenyl) propionate. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of temperature (°C), initial pH medium, agitation speed (rpm) and concentration of glucose (g/L) on the production of methyl 3-(3,5-...

Abstract—Agarwood is increasing in demand in the global market due to the presence of resinous wood that is widely used as an ingredient in perfumes, aromatherapy and traditional medicines. The popularity comes with concern on its unique smell (woody) and quality adulteration. This paper presents the response between chemical compositions in agarwo...

Agarwood or gaharu is resin-impregnated wood of the tree genus Aquilaria (Thymelaeaceae). In Malaysia, the main agarwood producer is Aquilaria malaccensis and oil extracted from this species is highly priced. One of the challenges in commercializing agarwood is the lack of universal standard to classify the aromatic oils. Our present knowledge plac...
Patent
Preheating requirements in the process of determining grade of agarwood oil is making the process difficult and lessen the efficiency. According to the present invention, there is provided a method of determining grade of agarwood oil at ambient temperature comprising (a) taking an amount of sample from said agarwood oil; (b) exposing said sample d...

Based on sharing of experiences with trusted swiftlet farming consultants and scientific approach, it is concluded that birdhouse aroma are divided into top and floor aroma. Formulated from natural plant, top aroma known as attractant aroma served to lure swiftlets especially young couple to enter the birdhouse. However, additional top aroma known...

Project
The main objective of this research is to utilize sugars derived from OPF juice as a novel and renewable carbon source for the production of VOCs through fermentation using fungus strain of Ceratocystis fimbriata (C. fimbriata). The specific objectives of the study are: 1) To study the growth profile of Ceratocystis fimbriata and to investigate its ability to produce VOCs by using OPF juice as a sole carbon source in the shake flask experiment. 2) To screen the parameters affecting methyl 3-(3,5-di-tert-butyl-4-hydroxyphenyl) propionate production such as effect of initial pH medium, agitation speed, incubation temperature and glucose concentration in OPF juice using the full factorial design method. 3) To optimize methyl 3-(3,5-di-tert-butyl-4-hydroxyphenyl) propionate production using Response Surface Methodology (RSM) with Central Composite Design (CCD) by investigating the effect of incubation temperature (°C), initial pH medium and agitation speed (rpm).
