Introduction
I am a senior lecturer in gemology specializing in gemstone treatments and identification. I hold multiple GIA qualifications and completed an MPhil on Geuda gemstone heat treatment. I actively share gemological knowledge through research, social media, and educational content, aiming to bridge the gap between science and industry while promoting ethical and practical advancements in gemology.

Black or brown tourmalines, commonly referred to as "Penithoora" or "Maangu" in Sinhalese, are predominantly found in Sri Lanka and are primarily used in the production of decorative items due to their limited market demand and lower value as gemstones. This study aims to investigate the conditions under which the color of black/brown tourmaline ca...

Geuda is a variety of corundum gems commonly found in Sri Lanka and Madagascar. Geuda lack colour and clarity compared to other sapphires yet has the potential to convert into quality blue sapphires by heat treatment at high temperatures. Gas-fired furnaces (GF) are commonly employed in the gem trade to heat treat Geuda. Recently introduced electri...

Geuda is a low-quality variety of corundum which can be converted into blue sapphire by heat treatment. Colour of the blue sapphire is mainly due to the presence of Iron (Fe) and Titanium (Ti) and their adjacent order in the lattice structure. The process of colouring is called Intervalence charge transfer, where an electron moves from one transiti...

Vein quartz is the major source of silicon for manufacturing of solar cells, computer chips, and silicon carbide. The aim of the investigation was to enhance the purity of exporting semi processed vein quartz by acid leaching. Particle size reduction processes crushing, grinding and milling increase the amount of iron in the quartz and this seconda...

Kahatagaha graphite mine is one of the leading graphite mines in Sri Lanka. It produces high-quality vein graphite with a carbon grade over 90%. It is considered as one of the highest-grade vein graphite mine in the world. Pyrite, quartz, chalcopyrite, feldspar are the main associate minerals with vein graphite in Kahatagaha mine. Extraction of gra...

Sri Lanka is famous for gemstones since ancient times. Among them, Tourmaline plays a major role in a wide range of colours. Gemstones can identify from their physical and optical properties, such as refractive index, UV spectrum and the presence of inclusions. Heat treatment is one of the most common methods to enhance the value of low-quality gem...

Maangu" is untagged stone in tourmaline group. The large amount of "Maangu" stones are found in Sri Tanka than other tourmaline verities. Since "Maangu" have less transparent appearance, they are seldom in jewellery items or any other decorative items, investigatig the enhancement of colour or change of colour of " Maangu" by heat treatment was the...

Graphite is the one of the main exporting mineral commodities in Sri Lanka which is found as flake graphite, vein graphite and, amorphous graphite. Kahatagaha, Bogala and Ragedara mines produce world’s best quality graphite with a Carbon grade over 90%. Quartz, pyrite, chalcopyrite, feldspar, calcite etc. are the associated trace minerals with the...

Remote sensing with the aid of hyper-spectral data are widely used in mineral exploration. However in Sri Lankan context remote sensing has not been used for mineral exploration due to non existence of most of required data and the vegetation cover is one of the major factor that limit the remote sensing approach. From that, the study area Balangod...

Sri Lanka has been known as 'Ratnadeepa', which translates to 'Island of gems' because of the precious natural gemstones found in its gravelly soil. Even though the gem industry in Sri Lanka extends back to ancient times, studies on patterns of gemstone occurrences were seldom. However, identification of potential gem bearing lands can provide guid...

Question
I'm doing a research about corundum ( alpha-aluminium oxide) which has titanium oxide and Iron oxide impurities. In the FTIR analysis I got a peak in between 508-520 wave numbers(cm-1). what kind of bond this indicate?
Thank you
