Introduction
Catarina Ruivo holds a MS in Architecture from Porto’s University and a PhD in Architecture, design and computation from Lisbon’s University, with a visiting period at the Bartlett School of Architecture. Her doctoral research focused on state-subsidised housing and its relationship with urban development, exploring the articulation of quantitative methods of spatial analysis with the sociological and historiographic aspects of architectural research.

The mass construction of public housing throughout the 20th-century across Europe had a great impact on the way cities grew. The urban and therefore social impact of housing estates has been thoroughly studied both within and outside the field of Space Syntax. However, decades after the first efforts within the field at deconstructing simplistic cl...

http://hdl.handle.net/10400.5/22143 This dissertation studies a set of public housing estates in Porto developed in the period surrounding the Portuguese revolution, part of which have rarely been examined in architectural research. In doing so, it seeks to provide a global reading of this period that may represent a counterpoint to the criticism l...

How Cultural Patterns Are Reflected On Domestic Space Has Been Vastly Discussed In Space Syntax Literature. The Genotype Analogy Was Developed With The Underlying Notion That The Configurational Properties Of Architectural Function Reflect Patterns Of Use And Activity That Are Culturally Structured. The Paper Will Further Investigate This Question...

This paper presents ScavaTools—a set of digital tools integrated into COTS software for architecture and urbanism (A&U). Its scope is on spatial configuration, accessibility, and visibility analysis (SCAVA), correlating different methodologies and underlying theories such as ‘isovists’, ‘space syntax’, ‘visibility graph analysis’ and ‘agent-based a...

The article delves into the potential application of space syntax methodology to landscape architecture. Anticipating the complexity of the landscape architectural design process, the use of 3D space syntax analysis made it possible to better understand the relations between urban space shapes and their functions. The application of an iterative pr...

The paper will focus on research regarding DepthSpace3D: a 3D Space Syntax analysis software. This new digital tool increases the range of possibilities regarding 3D analysis, which seems to have advantages over current 2D analysis. The case study used to test those concepts was the iconic (and controversial) Casa da Música (by Rem Koolhaas, OMA) a...

During the Portuguese post-revolutionary period in the 1970's public housing policies were restructured, resulting in the organization of public housing development in three groups; direct state development, state co-subsidized housing co-operatives and construction of private housing for organized ill-housed populations in the city centre. The lat...
