Introduction
I am currently interested in plant phylogeny and population genetics of plants and their interface with evolution, phylogeography, and plant morphology as quantified by multivariate and geometric morphometrics. Currently PI of a molecular biology laboratory in the topics above, with emphasis in Orchidaceae, but also other relevant groups for understanding the evolution of the eastern Brazilian biota and Neotropical biogeography.

Since the last classification of Orchidaceae in 2003, there has been major progress in the determination of relationships, and we present here a revised classification including a list of all 736 currently recognized genera. A number of generic changes have occurred in Orchideae (Orchidoideae), but the majority of changes have occurred in Epidendro...

A new classification for the 114 species Cattleya is proposed, based on and compatible with previously published nuclear, plastid and combined phylogenetic trees. Cattleya is divided into four subgenera, three sections and five series. A key to the infrageneric categories and a table listing all species and their placement is presented.

Phylogenetic relationships within the epidendroid orchids with emphasis on tribes Epidendreae and Arethuseae were assessed with parsimony and model-based analyses of individual and combined DNA sequence data from ITS nuclear ribosomal DNA and plastid trnL intron, the trnL-F spacer, matK (gene and spacers), and rbcL regions. Despite the absence of b...

DNA barcoding involves sequencing a standard region of DNA as a tool for species identification. However, there has been no agreement on which region(s) should be used for barcoding land plants. To provide a community recommendation on a standard plant barcode, we have compared the performance of 7 leading candidate plastid DNA regions (atpF–atpH s...

Laeliinae are a neotropical orchid subtribe with approx. 1500 species in 50 genera. In this study, an attempt is made to assess generic alliances based on molecular phylogenetic analysis of DNA sequence data. Six DNA datasets were gathered: plastid trnL intron, trnL-F spacer, matK gene and trnK introns upstream and dowstream from matK and nuclear I...

Plant pigments are diverse natural molecules involved in numerous biological functions such as development, growth, and metabolism. As plants age, not only new organs will be formed, but also, they will acquire the necessary pigments in response to the environment and endogenous programming in order to achieve reproductive success. Among the endoge...

In the present study we perform a linear morphometric analysis to assess species delimitation in Cattleya caulescens, C. pabstii, and C. pfisteri, which constitute a species complex in Brazilian campos rupestres. For this purpose, we collected 18 linear measurement variables from flowers of 153 individuals in 11 populations from the three species i...

Different views on recognising taxa associated with the Campomanesia xanthocarpa group (Myrtaceae) demonstrate the difficulties in clearly delimiting species. Studies using Inter Simple Sequence Repeats (ISSR) molecular markers were carried out on 201 individuals from 13 populations of C. xanthocarpa Mart. ex O.Berg, C. adamantium (Cambess.) O.Berg...

Molecular phylogenetic studies have revealed the polyphyletic nature of Cladophora as traditionally circumscribed, which is separated into four main clades: Cladophoraceae, Siphonocladus, Pithophoraceae and Pseudocladophoraceae. Several taxonomic proposals have recently been made to resolve its polyphyletic nature. The present work focuses on the c...
