Introduction
I am currently interested in plant phylogeny and population genetics of plants and their interface with evolution, phylogeography, and plant morphology as quantified by multivariate and geometric morphometrics. Currently PI of a molecular biology laboratory in the topics above, with emphasis in Orchidaceae, but also other relevant groups for understanding the evolution of the eastern Brazilian biota and Neotropical biogeography.

Since the last classification of Orchidaceae in 2003, there has been major progress in the determination of relationships, and we present here a revised classification including a list of all 736 currently recognized genera. A number of generic changes have occurred in Orchideae (Orchidoideae), but the majority of changes have occurred in Epidendro...
A new classification for the 114 species Cattleya is proposed, based on and compatible with previously published nuclear, plastid and combined phylogenetic trees. Cattleya is divided into four subgenera, three sections and five series. A key to the infrageneric categories and a table listing all species and their placement is presented.
Phylogenetic relationships within the epidendroid orchids with emphasis on tribes Epidendreae and Arethuseae were assessed with parsimony and model-based analyses of individual and combined DNA sequence data from ITS nuclear ribosomal DNA and plastid trnL intron, the trnL-F spacer, matK (gene and spacers), and rbcL regions. Despite the absence of b...
DNA barcoding involves sequencing a standard region of DNA as a tool for species identification. However, there has been no agreement on which region(s) should be used for barcoding land plants. To provide a community recommendation on a standard plant barcode, we have compared the performance of 7 leading candidate plastid DNA regions (atpF–atpH s...
Laeliinae are a neotropical orchid subtribe with approx. 1500 species in 50 genera. In this study, an attempt is made to assess generic alliances based on molecular phylogenetic analysis of DNA sequence data.
Six DNA datasets were gathered: plastid trnL intron, trnL-F spacer, matK gene and trnK introns upstream and dowstream from matK and nuclear I...
The Brazilian semiarid region presents a rainy season, characterized by irregular precipitation, and a dry season. In turn, the palm tree Syagrus coronata is a key species from this region, being highly exploited by local human populations. Understanding how climate and landscape changes have affected the distribution of genetic diversity among and...
Four new species of Mimosa series Cordistipulae (Leguminosae: Caesalpinioideae: Mimosoid clade) are described from Bahia state, Brazil: M. crassifolia, M. bahiana and M. confusa from rupestrian grasslands (campo rupestre vegetation) of the Chapada Diamantina mountain range, and M. melosa from inland dry scrub on sand dunes of the São Francisco Rive...
Vanilla calamitosa is described and illustrated from southern Bahia. Its conservation status is assessed as Critically Endangered (CR). Vanilla calamitosa is the second known aphyllous species in South America and the sixth of the Americas. The other aphyllous species in the continent is V. penicillata, which has occasionally been misidentified as...
The present study evaluated the population structure and genetic diversity using inter simple sequence repeat (ISSR) markers in 18 natural populations belonging to three species of Eplingiella (E. cuniloides, E. fruticosa and E. brightoniae), found growing naturally in the semiarid region of Northeast Brazil. Samples of 265 plants were analyzed usi...
The early-branching clades of Fabaceae subfamily Papilionoideae are characterized by their remarkable lability in floral architecture. In contrast, more derived papilionoid lineages are marked by evolutionary conservatism towards strongly bilateral, papilionate flowers. Here, we show an unexpected example of conservatism of a unique floral architec...

Campomanesia comprises approximately 45 species, and 18 of them are organized into three informal morphological complexes. Among these, the “C. xanthocarpa complex” includes nine accepted species displaying delimitation problems, especially in C. adamantium (Cambess.) O.Berg, C. eugenioides (Cambes.) D.Legrand ex Landrum and C. xanthocarpa (Mart.)...
To contribute to what is known about involvement of vegetation dynamics in Neotropical speciation, we used the Epidendrum latilabre complex, a taxonomically well-defined species group, to investigate past connections between Amazonian (AM) and Atlantic (AF) forests and address the following topics: (1) divergence times between sister species curren...

Piresia, a Neotropical herbaceous bamboo genus (Poaceae, Olyreae) including six described species, has a disjunct geographic distribution involving the Caribbean and north/western South America and the northeastern Atlantic Forest in Brazil. Its phylogenetic relationships are poorly known, especially with respect to certain monotypic genera within...
The urge to organise the world around us is an essential part of human nature. Naming and categorising enable us to store and access information ef ciently. The need to name and categorise extends to the natural world and, in particular, to living organisms. The science underpinning this area of knowledge is called Taxonomy, and is as old as humani...
Pseudolaelia Campos Porto & Brade (1935: 209) is a small orchid genus in subtribe Laeliinae. Its phylogenetic affinities place it near several small, endemic genera which constitute an isolated lineage in eastern Brazil, together with Adamantinia Van den Berg & Gonçalves (2004: 231), Constantia Barbosa Rodrigues (1877: 78), Isabelia Barbosa Rodrigu...
In the past two decades, Malpighiaceae has gone through unprecedented changes in classification due to molecular phylogenetic studies. However, some generic adjustments are still needed to make all genera monophyletic. In this study, we propose the
new genus Glicophyllum to accommodate the species of Tetrapterys pro parte, a well-supported lineage...
We investigated the biogeography of Stigmaphyllon, the second-largest lianescent genus of Malpighiaceae, as a model genus to reconstruct the age and biogeographic history of the Brazilian Atlantic Rainforest (BAF). Few studies to date have focused on the tertiary diversification of plant lineages in the BAFs, especially on Stigmaphyllon. Phylogenet...
In this study, we analyse a species complex in Epidendrum, a mega-diverse Neotropical orchid genus, that is formed by the 11 Brazilian species of the E. difforme group. Although this group (c. 100 taxa) exhibits relatively high levels of floral variation, the Brazilian species are similar, making delimitation problematic. Here we combine molecular...

Chloroplast genomes (cpDNA) in angiosperms are usually highly conserved. Although rearrangements have been observed in some lineages, such as Passiflora, the mechanisms that lead to rearrangements are still poorly elucidated. In the present study, we obtained 20 new chloroplast genomes (18 species from the genus Passiflora, and Dilkea retusa and Mi...
Pseudolaelia is a genus endemic to the eastern Brazilian Atlantic Forest, consisting of 12 accepted species. Some Pseudolaelia species, such as P. vellozicola, P. aguadocensis, P. oliveirana, and P. regentii, referred to here as the PV complex, present extensive intra‐ and interpopulation morphological polymorphism, raising uncertainty regarding th...
In the present paper we provide lectotypifications for the names Prosthechea bohnkiana, P. carrii, and P. elisae, and epitypes for the first two. These typifications were necessary due to gross disagreement between the available specimens and the data provided by the authors in the protologues of these names.
We present nomenclatural and taxonomic studies of selected species and names of Neotropical Orchidaceae currently placed in Bifrenaria, Cleistes, and Pleurothallis, but once classified in ten different genera. Several nomenclatural and taxonomic actions are proposed, including changes in nomenclatural status, typifications, and taxonomic rearrangem...
Understanding the composition of the type specimen of Pseudolaelia corcovadensis is very important for establishing its taxonomic circumscription. This specimen, originally collected on the Morro do Corcovado in the municipality of Rio de Janeiro, within the Atlantic Forest biome, were mixed with those of another species of Pseudolaelia. A careful...
A taxonomic revision of Capanemia (Orchidaceae) was completed after morphological, nomenclatural and phylogenetic studies. Our analyses do not support the infrageneric classification (Capanemia sect. Capanemia and Capanemia sect. Planifolia) proposed by Pabst in the seventies and recovered Sanderella as the sister group of Capanemia, albeit with lo...
Universal angiosperm enrichment probe sets designed to enrich hundreds of putatively orthologous nuclear single-copy loci are increasingly being applied to infer phylogenetic relationships of different lineages of angiosperms at a range of evolutionary depths. Studies applying such probe sets have focused on testing the universality and performance...
The taxonomy of some groups of plants is challenging, and the strict use of morphological characters may not be enough to solve problems of species delimitation. Hildaea, a genus of tropical grasses recently segregated from Ichnanthus section Foveolatus, is mostly composed of species with obscure boundaries. This group was revised by two authors, R...
We estimated phylogenetic relationships of Polygala inferred from nrITS, matK‐trnK, trnL intron, trnL‐trnF intergenic spacer, and rbcL sequence data, with emphasis on the New World clade. Our results did not support the New World and Old World clades as sister groups in Polygala. Relationships among Polygala and allied genera are being discussed, w...
Two of the major challenges in plant evolutionary studies are the development of orthologous molecular markers variable enough to resolve interspecific relationships and generating such data for a large number of species in 'me-ga-diverse' lineages. One such lineage is the Neotropical orchid genus Epidendrum, as our recent estimates indicate that i...
This paper provides details on the publication of Cattleya labiata and the original confusion about its geographical origin and mixing up with Cattleya lobata.
Hybridization and introgression are considered important processes in the evolution of plant species and populations. Their outcomes are unpredictable and can range from increased genetic variation that could then be selected, therefore accelerating speciation, to the opposite process, when high amounts of admixing could homogenize populations from...
