We revisit the sequential search problem by Hey (J Econ Behav Organ 8:137-144, 1987). In a 2 2 factorial design, varying fixed and random cost treatments with and without recall, we address open research questions that were originally stated by Hey (1987). Our results provide clear evidence for Hey's (1987) conjecture that recall negatively affects...
This paper presents a monetary stochastic general equilibrium model that allows the real cyclical movements of the economy to be explained as a consequence of exogenous monetary, public spending, and technology shocks. The model is calibrated and simulated, and its accuracy in replicating the cyclical movements in the real variables is compared wit...
In decision theory several preference structures are used for modeling co- herence and rational behavior. In this paper we establish, from an algebraic approach, characterizations of some general properties involving preference and indierence relations, as well as the more common preference structures used in the literature. ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS: The f...
We provide two new indices of efficiency for determining the degree of coherence in an agent’s consumption decisions. We analyze to what extent they improve the efficiency displayed by Varian’s [9] index. We report on the results of a Monte Carlo experiment that confirms that strict improvements of Varian’s vector-index appear on a regular basis.
For any Walrasian demand function, the Strong Axiom implies (and is implied by) rationalizability by a complete preorder. However, these equivalent conditions do not ensure the existence of a continuous utility function or complete preorder giving raise to the primitive demand. We here propose a self-contained proof of a related fact: if the demand...
We study the problem of the existence and uniqueness of solutions to the Bellman equation in the presence of unbounded returns. We introduce a new approach based both on consideration of a metric on the space of all continuous functions over the state space, and on the application of some metric fixed point theorems. With appropriate conditions we...
We present here a direct elementary construction of continuous utility functions on perfectly separable totally preordered
sets that does not make use of the well-known Debreu’s open gap lemma. This new construction leans on the concept of a separating
countable decreasing scale. Starting from a perfectly separable totally ordered structure, we giv...
The purpose of this paper is to provide an exact algebraic solution to a fully specified Romer endogenous growth model. The proposed model has three main virtues. First, taking Romer's [1986] model as the starting point, we build a completely and explicitly micro-founded competitive general equilibrium model. Second, this version consistently incor...
A new framework is presented for the study of the existence and uniqueness of solutions to the Koopmans’ equation in the unbounded
case, that is based on the contraction mapping approach. In the bounded below case with bounded consumption streams, uniqueness
of the solution in the whole class of weak-star continuous utility functions is obtained. W...
The resort to utility-theoretical issues will permit us to propose a constructive procedure for deriving a homogeneous of degree one continuous function that gives raise to a primitive demand function under suitably mild conditions. This constitutes the first self-contained and elementary proof of a necessary and sufficient condition for an integra...
The resort to utility-theoretical issues will permit us to propose a constructive procedure for deriving a homogeneous of degree one, continuous function that gives raise to a primitive demand function under suitably mild conditions. This constitutes the first elementary proof of a necessary and sufficient condition for an integrability problem to...
We offer an alternative approach to the study of representability of choice behavior in a competitive framework that is based on recent advances in utility theory (cf. Alcantud and Rodrí guez-Palmero (1999)). Our technique enables us to tackle this classical problem efficiently in fairly general situations, thus obtaining alternative sufficient con...
The aim of this paper is to provide necessary and sufficient continuity conditions for the existence of maximal elements of irreflexive, acyclic and transitive binary relations defined on compact sets. The results answer a question raised by Campbell and Walker [Journal of Economic Theory 50 (1990) 459–464], among others, who in fact established a...
In this paper we characterize the existence of semicontinous weak utilities for acyclic binary relations. We shall reobtain directly from that result sufficient conditions that are available in the literature.
In this work we present sufficient conditions under which the acyclicity of a preference relation > is equivalent to the existence of two functions u: X→[0, 1] and ρ: X×X→[0, 1] such that x>yu(x)>u(y)+ρ(x, y).
This paper presents a monetary stochastic general equilibrium model with bank reserves and no money illusion that allows the real cyclical movements of the economy to be explained as a consequence of exoge-nous monetary and technology shocks. The proposed model, a stochastic version of Gutiérrez's (2006) model, is calibrated and simulated, and its...
This paper presents a monetary stochastic general equilibrium model with bank reserves and no money illusion that allows the real cyclical movements of the economy to be explained as a consequence of exoge- nous monetary shocks. The ultimate intention is to show that monetary shocks are relevant in explaining the economy's real ∞uctuations in an RB...
