Introduction
Carlos M. Pereira currently works at CiTUA, University of Lisbon - Instituto Superior Técnico and at the group Research[x]Design, University of Leuven. Carlos does research in Architecture, exploring multisensory spaces aiming health promotion, in a context of mitigation and adaptation to climate change. In 2006 he became blind and maintains his architectural activity, in teaching and in professional practice. In 2008 he started his Ph.D, concluded in 2013. www.carlosmouraopereira.net

Values bind us together which makes our communities stronger and united. Communities are built upon our tolerance and understanding of the value of our ties, and ties pave our cities towards a bright future. The structure of this book is constructed around the concept of value”. It contains a collection of readings about the Challenges we face in C...
Conference Paper
Climate change phenomena, in particular current excessive ultraviolet radiation and increasing heat waves, require safe shade for bathers during the hours of higher sun exposure in risk periods. Urban beaches are often crowded spaces during midday hours. For suburban families, without private transportation, it is difficult to limit the stay just t...
Conference Paper
Abstract Bathing facilities may provide spatial conditions to promote physical activity and relaxation. In terms of preventing epidemic airborne diseases, outdoor pools are safer than indoor ones because of risks related with ventilation efforts. In the 20th century a tanned skin was perceived as a sign of a healthy body and outdoor pools promoting...

In Architecture, there are rare cases of designers who apply current scientific knowledge in their design synthesis. Also, there are few researchers who have the possibility to test the knowledge, which they have acquired, directly in their buildings. Aiming to bridge this disconnection, the concept of Evidence-Based Design emerged, which proposes...

This paper presents an exploratory study about multisensory perception in the use of the urban loggia, i.e., outdoor covered space open to one or more sides integrated in the ground level of buildings, providing public shaded walkways and living areas. Due to current temporary occurrences of extreme intensity of ultra-violet radiation and the incre...

The quality of invisibility in museum spaces is presented, involving architecture and exhibition design. Museums are places of advanced cultural interpretation, where inclusivity is a premise in a democratic society. However, paradoxically, often buildings’ and exhibitions’ designs promote people’s exclusion by absence of thinking in other sensory...
Presentation
It is presented a selection of work processes related with three different architecture approaches, specifically: research, professional practice and teaching; all developed in the condition of blindness. Visual artefacts, such as pictures and short stays in loco, are often the basis for the architecture work process in the fully sighted condition...
Presentation

People with a temporary or permanent physical impairment are often excluded from bathing activities due to the difficulties of getting in and out of the water. This paper explores pool design, specifically the design of the access to the tank, which is the key to pools’ inclusivity. In trying to break down existing barriers between users, accessibi...
Experiment Findings
Sendo a construção do an...

In this paper we present research methods usable in the absence of sight with the objective of exploring techniques that can allow spatial knowledge beyond vision. There is a visual dominance in contemporary built spaces neglecting invisibility, i.e. the multisensory integration of non-visual modalities. An example of this ocularcentrism can be fou...

Definição do conceito de Arquitetura Inclusiva.
Presentation
The ocularcentrism presented on contemporary built spaces is responsible for the multi-sensory alienation related with non visual modalities, with damaging consequences regarding sustainable space quality. Designers often forget the social sustainable dimension of invisibility, specifically that all the users, including fully sighted, partially sig...
Presentation
This communication explores the application of the principle of integrated invisibility, i.e., a multisensory thinking of architecture, designing taking in consideration space qualities beyond vision. Aiming to balance the visual dominance existing in current architecture production, easy techniques are presented to experience the non visual senso...
Presentation
The correlation between health and tourism presents a synergetic contribution for a growing society, if it is considered the architecture resilience to the demands of an emerging ageing population. The elderly are subjected to decreasing of mobility and visual acuity, with consequent risk of falls. Therefore, it is essential to consider built space...

This research explores the space dimension of invisibility, i.e. the absence of visual perception, temporary or permanent, including the human conditions of fully sighted, partially sighted and blind people, as the key-requirement to guarantee architecture quality of rapid transit systems. Specifically through transport stations’ design, e.g. metro...
Presentation
Presentation
It is presented a selection of architecture works designed in approximately a decade, in two different conditions, specifically fully-sighted and blindness. The mentioned condition of visual impairment, was explored to increase multi-sensoriality, through the conscience of the invisibility, temporary or permanent that all the users are subjected in...
Presentation
