What is philosophy and who is the philosopher? What should be the relationship between the philosopher and the city? And what should be the attitude that the philosopher must have with respect to tradition, religion and politics? These questions, which have spanned the entire history of Western philosophical thought, from ancient Greece onwards, fo...

The philosophical dialogue between Gershom Scholem and Leo Strauss begins in the years of Weimar Republic and continues until 1973, when Strauss dies in the United States. Their confrontation – that is achieved in their correspondence of the years 1933-1973 – covers many themes, especially the status of Jewish culture in the twentieth century, the...

Through the definition and the elaboration of his political philosophy, Hobbes wishes to present himself as a relevant representative of the new mechanistic and deterministic science of the seventeenth century, by applying Galilei’s method in politics and by refusing the Aristotelian metaphysic and natural philosophy as well. The aim of the present...

In the history of modern political philosophy, the concept of «potentia» has been interpreted sometimes as power, other times as possibility. The union - provisional and unstable, but real - between these two interpretations took place in the modern State, in which the reason has become a political system and the «potentia» has stood as guarantor f...

Jerusalem is the holy city for Leo Strauss. It is the symbol of Judaism; moreover it is a root of Western culture together with Athens. But it would be wrong to label Strauss' philosophical thought with such definitions as ‘Jewish philosophy’. Therefore it is surprising that many contemporary interpreters strive to find a confessional or religious...

The relationships between politics and religion have always been the focus of Hobbesian literature, which generally privileges the theme of the Christian State, i.e. the union of temporal and spiritual power in a sovereign-representative person. This essay presents other perspectives of interpretation, which analyze the relationships between politi...

Leo Strauss' hermeneutics is related to a rational and un-traditional conception of philosophy: the reticence of the philosophical writing is a direct result of two different phenomena in the history of political societies, the persecution and the education. The hermeneutic question is therefore at the centre of the Strauss' «theological-political...

The present article discusses the relationship between might (potentia ) and power (potestas) as it has unfolded throughout the modern age, from Thomas Hobbes to Carl Schmitt.
