Altos estruturais e/ou vulcânicos, de natureza e extensão geográficas distintas, separam as bacias de Santos, Campos e Espírito Santo e afetam diretamente as 3 áreas. De sul para norte, a bacia de Pelotas é separada da bacia de Santos por um complexo vulcano-estrutural – o Alto de Florianópolis-Dorsal de São Paulo; enquanto o Alto de Cabo Frio é outro lineamento vulcano-estrutural que define o limite norte da bacia de Santos e sul da bacia de Campos. Já o limite sul da bacia do Espírito Santo (limite norte da bacia de Campos) é, para finalidades legais, definido pelo Alto de Vitória. Estes altos estruturais tiveram papel importante na segmentação estrutural e sedimentar destas bacias, provavelmente desde o início da fase rifte. Deste modo, o principal objetivo desta proposta é a investigação da evolução tectono-sedimentar destes principais altos estruturais da margem continental sudeste brasileira, focalizando na sua influência sobre o registro e a arquitetura sedimentar das bacias marginais de Santos, Campos e Espírito Santo.
