The purpose of the Utah Project on Exfoliation Syndrome (UPEXS) is to identify associations between exfoliation syndrome (XFS) and other diseases that share the commonality of abnormalities in elastin and Lysyl Oxidase-Like 1 gene regulation. The UPEXS is unique because it uses the Utah Population Database, which is linked to the Utah genealogy, th...

Purpose: Exfoliation syndrome (XFS), the most common recognizable cause of open-angle glaucoma worldwide, is a systemic disorder with genetic predisposition due to variations in lysyl oxidase-like 1 (LOXL1) function, leading to altered elastin matrices in ocular and systemic tissues. Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is a highly prevalent disorder als...

Purpose To report a case of conjunctivitis due to Mycobacterium abscessus in the setting of keratoconjunctivitis sicca due to Sjögren's syndrome in the absence of other known risk factors such as surgery, trauma or immunosuppressive therapy. Observations A 61-year-old woman with a history of keratoconjunctivitis sicca secondary to Sjögren's syndro...

Purpose : Visual field (VF) testing is often not performed in resource-poor settings due to lack of access to standard automated perimetry (SAP). Virtual reality (VR) perimetry headsets have been validated against SAP in recent studies, however the practicality of using these devices in the field is yet unmeasured1,2. Methods : We performed a pros...

Background: Visual impairment, specifically anterior segment pathology, presents a significant burden of disease in the world. Introduction: Inexpensive tools are necessary to improve eye health of residents in developing countries where care is difficult to access. Our study aimed at determining whether a $5 macro lens attached to a smartphone ca...

Purpose: To evaluate posterior capsule opacification (PCO) with a new hydrophobic acrylic intraocular lens (IOL) featuring a new micropatterned membrane, in comparison with a commercially available 1-piece hydrophobic acrylic IOL. Setting: John A. Moran Eye Center, University of Utah, Salt Lake City, Utah, USA. Study design: Experimental study...

Exfoliation syndrome (XFS), also known as pseudoexfoliation syndrome, is a systemic disorder that is usually recognized by characteristic findings in the anterior segment of the eye. This paper discusses the ocular and systemic risk factors that cause XFS to progress to exfoliation glaucoma (XFG)

Purpose: To evaluate the use of a new hybrid phacoemulsification tip made with a high strength polymer overmold designed to prevent posterior capsule rupture (PCR) compared with a metal tip. Setting: John A. Moran Eye Center, University of Utah, USA. Design: Experimental study. Methods: This ex vivo crossover study compared a new phacoemulsi...

Purpose : To describe the risk factors associated with pseudoexfoliation and progression to glaucoma. Methods : Of 500 patients with pseudoexfoliation, a random sample of 26 patients were selected for this retrospective, chart review study. The patients had been seen between the years of 1980 to 2018. The patientshad been stratified according to t...

We describe the case of a female patient who had 3-piece silicone intraocular lenses (IOLs)bilaterally implanted after uneventful surgeries in 2007. Nine years later, the IOLs were explanted and exchanged with 3-piece hydrophobic acrylic IOLs because of cloudiness on their posterior aspect. Two years later, a similar finding was observed on the hyd...

Purpose To compare visual acuity outcomes of cataract surgery between patients with and without non‐glaucomatous optic neuropathies. Methods Retrospective case‐control study of patients with and without optic neuropathies who underwent cataract surgery from 2010 to 2017. For all eyes, the last preoperative best corrected visual acuity (BCVA) and f...

Purpose: To report long-term visual and astigmatism outcomes in cases of zig-zag femtosecond laser-enabled penetrating keratoplasty (FLEK). Methods: Retrospective review. Three hundred thirty-five eyes of 287 patients underwent (FLEK) with a zig-zag incision pattern. Patients were assessed preoperatively and underwent postoperative comprehensive...

Purpose: To compare the effect of 3 common suturing techniques on eyes that received femtosecond laser-enabled penetrating keratoplasty (FLEK) with a zig-zag configuration at the Gavin Herbert Eye Institute, University of California- Irvine, California. Methods: This is a retrospective chart review of a series of 319 eyes of 286 patients who und...

The inferior rectus is one of the four rectus muscles, which also include the superior rectus, the medial rectus, and the lateral rectus. There are also two oblique muscles, the superior and inferior obliques. The seventh extr...

The conjunctiva of the eye provides protection and lubrication of the eye by the production of mucus and tears. It prevents microbial entrance into the eye and plays a role in immune surveillance. It lines the inside of the eyelids and provides a covering to the sclera. It is highly vascularized and home to extensive lymphatic vessels. The conjunct...

There are 7 extraocular muscles. There are a total of 4 rectus muscles, 2 oblique muscles, and the levator palpebrae superioris. The 4 rectus muscles are the medial rectus, lateral rectus, superior rectus, and inferior rectus. The oblique muscles are the superior and inferior obliques. The levator palpebrae superioris is primarily responsible for e...

Purpose : While there are several studies which show the outcome of suture pattern in traditional penetrating keratoplasty, suggesting that a single running suture may significantly improve rates of astigmatism, it is not known whether this is also true for patients who receive Femtosecond Laser Enabled Keratoplasty (FLEK). We performed a retrospec...

Purpose To review the visual acuity outcomes of cataract surgery in patients with optic neuropathies. Secondarily, to compare these visual acuity outcomes to a dataset of patients without any prior history of optic neuropathy who underwent cataract surgery. We hypothesize that there is no statistically significant difference in improvement in visua...
