Introduction
My PhD was a proposal of a semiotic model of IoT technology appropriation, which was a theoretical development based on Semiotic Engineering and empirical qualitative studies in human-computer interaction and human-centered computing in the domain of the Internet of Things. I am mostly interested in studying innovative interactive technologies from a human-centric perspective. Currently, I am a post-doc researcher working with interactive aspects of AI-based technologies, such as chatbots, etc.

Intelligent conversational agents have become widespread. Inspired by conversations in natural language, they present different degrees of intelligence and autonomy, bringing challenges for Human-Computer Interaction (HCI). One such challenge concerns design languages for modeling user-agent interaction. We focus here on MoLIC, a design-phase dialo...
Background:
The potential of chatbots for screening and monitoring COVID-19 was envisioned since the very outbreak of the disease. Chatbots can help disseminate up-to-date and trustworthy information, promote healthy social behavior and support the provision of healthcare services safely and at scale. In this scenario and in view of its far-reachi...

This article describes the construction and deployment of the Covid Data Analytics Repository, a source for interdisciplinary studies about the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic in Brazil. We collected different types of data from official (IBGE, DATASUS) and non-official (Brasil.IO) sources, online social networks (Instagram, Twitter), and from a se...
BACKGROUND
Although a great number of teleconsultation services have been developed during COVID-19 pandemic, studies assessing usability and healthcare provider satisfaction are still incipient.
OBJECTIVE
To describe the development, implementation and expansion of a synchronous teleconsultation service targeting patients with symptoms of COVID-1...

The COVID-19 pandemic and the need for social distancing have created a demand for new and innovative solutions in healthcare systems worldwide. One of the strategies that have been implemented are chatbots, which can be helpful in providing reliable health information and preventing people from seeking assistance in healthcare centers and being un...
The novel coronavirus pandemic has overloaded healthcare systems to the limit. Our aim was to assess the effectiveness of a chatbot to identify symptoms of COVID-19. The chatbot was developed to screen patients before teleconsultation. The symptoms informed in the dialogue were compared with those reported to the doctors in an emergency service. Am...

The Internet of Things (IoT) is an emerging technology powered by smart devices that increasingly populate our environment and transform our practices. Understanding how technologies are appropriated is a key asset for designing them successfully. In this paper, we present findings from an in situ study where we observed how people use and adapt co...
The Internet of Things (IoT) is an emerging technology powered by smart devices that increasingly pervades our environments and practices. The process of incorporating technology into one's practices involves use and adaptation of the technology and is usually referred to as appropriation. In research about IoT, appropriation of IoT technology is a...
Assistive Technology (AT) aims at compensating for motor, sensory or cognitive functional limitations of its users. One of the reasons AT is hard to design and turn into a product is the variability of kinds and degrees of disabilities and individual characteristics among users (physical, psychological, cultural and environmental). This variability...
Assistive Technology (AT) aims at compensating for motor, sensory or cognitive functional limitations of its users. We report on a study with a single tetraplegic participant using AT that we have been developing for interaction with multiple devices in smart connected environments. We wanted to investigate a user’s reaction during his first encoun...
Assistive technology (AT) aims at compensating for motor, sensory or cognitive functional limitations of its users. Severely disabled users typically need to rely on family and caregivers to setup and manage the technology they need to use on a daily basis. We propose a conceptual blueprint for an assistive technology micro-groupware platform for u...
