Recently the Free Trade Agreements (FTAs) have been drawing public attention enormously being affected by new waves of political populism, alter-globalisation, and some other tendencies redefining the patterns in the world economic ties. From the European perspective, the Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA), and the Transatlantic Trad...

A 2017 CEPR report reveals that economic factors do matter with regards to trust in the political institutions of the EU but they do not play the main role. Therefore, it seems quite natural to ask: what is an explanatory power of economics in grasping the recent social behaviour dynamics, including the European integration processes and actual ris...

Chapter
This chapter uses natural language processing tools to analyse the sentiment and emotions contained in online news articles and readers’ comments. We argue that the emotional charge conveyed in the media coverage may strongly resonate in the social perception. We also explore the polarising narratives present in the free trade debate and consider t...
Chapter
This chapter tries to capture both the factors that created “the symbolic power” and “the symbolic efficacy” (Bourdieu. Critique of Anthropology, 4[13–14], 77–85, 1979) of economists’ narrative concerning international trade and map some critical factors of its transformation. First, we provide a brief overview of the theoretical concepts embedded...
Chapter
The chapter consists of three distinctive sections. First, it provides a demonstration of how the Polish academic literature on the effects of Free Trade Agreements (FTAs) compares to that in English, French, German, and Italian. It shows that the Polish outputs follow patterns similar to those in the other languages and makes a proposition that th...
Chapter
This chapter provides a compact guided tour through a careful selection of facts and figures of international trade. We highlight the developments, trends, and tendencies which appear critical for creating narratives that are spread within the public domain. We also present a brief description of the FTAs referenced in our empirical material presen...
Chapter
The chapter compares the Polish society to its international peers to determine the extent to which FTA attitudes are country-specific, and to what extent they fit and connect with the pan-European perspectives. We look closer at the values relevant from the perspective of international trade and the processes of globalisation. How similar or how d...
Chapter
In this chapter, we create a media populism ratio based on Farrand and Carrapico’s (2019) key characteristics of populist and technocratic political styles. The self-imposed question, which at the same time constitutes a certain summary of our prior considerations, concerns the role the media might play in shaping the polarisation mechanism. We use...

Evolution of speculative attack models shows certain progress in developing the idea of the role of expectations in the crisis mechanism. Obstfeld (1996) defines expectations as fully exogenous. Morris and Shin (1998) treat the expectations as endogenous (with respect to noise), not devoting too much attention to information structure of the foreig...

Project
CREST project aims to help vulnerable urban areas to set-up and roll-out collaborative platforms based on a breakthrough Augmented reality technology and co-creation approaches to support environmental decision making and innovative policy practices, enabling robust and resilient responses to climate change. The project will pilot a ground-breaking way to operate digital twins of cities, enabling data and “what-if” scenarios to be analysed and visualised in an interactive and immersive visualisation tool to be used by policy-makers, researchers, companies and citizens in 3 European urban areas: Kołobrzeg, Bourdeux i Møre og Romsdal. CREST consortium involves eight partner institutions from Poland, France, Norway and France. The research will be conducted in 2022-2024. Principal Investigator for the Polish study site is Prof. Bogna Gawrońska-Nowak. The project is co-financed by National Research Agencies and European Commission within ERA-NET Cofund Urban Transformation Capacities Call (ENUTC). CREST applies digital twins approach in terms of demonstration, co-creation and mobilization of stakeholders for capacity-building and collective decision-making. This will help respond to the EU agenda on Urban Transformation and achieve the UN SDG goals.

ISEED – Inclusive Science and European Democracies, is an international research project funded by the European Union’s Horizon 2020 Research and Innovation Programme (2021-2024). ISEED responds to the EU’s call for supporting inclusive, innovative and reflective societies in Europe, specifically by “Developing deliberative and participatory democracies through experimentation”. ISEED, coordinated by Ca’ Foscari University of Venice joins researchers from Italy, France, Poland, Norway, Denmark, Ireland, Spain, Bulgaria, Uruguay and the United Kingdom for the next 3 years to learn lessons from citizen science engagement projects in order to understand how to involve citizens in democratic deliberation. https://iseedeurope.eu/
Project
Based on the success of our October 2018 conference in Carlton House, our new funding grant helps cement this international, interdisciplinary, and extra-disciplinary group which combines views and voices from across the political spectrum. The network grew from our initial concern that there is an urgent but under-recognised need for collaborative research into what "Europe" is, and should be, in a time of rapid and potentially traumatic change across the entire continent. Frustrated with the fragmentation of academic approaches to "Europe", by the weak dialogue between academic and non-academic sectors, and especially by dwindling opportunities for people with different normative perspectives on "Europe" and the EU to talk to each other in a civil forum, this group was created. We believe that there is an increasing, and urgent, need for critical dialogue between different disciplines in EU studies, between academia and the "real world", and most importantly, between Europhiles and Eurosceptics. We hope that our network will provide a forum for fostering much-needed dialogue between different nations, different career stages, between academics and non-academics, and perhaps most importantly, between different normative visions of what "Europe" is - and what it should be.
