Project
This project studies China's recent population policies (including the shift to a two-child policy and policies relating to population aging). It looks at both central and local levels, i.e. policy-making and implementation, in these two sub-fields of population policy in comparison to glean insights into the Chinese policy process. As a sideline, the project also studies the social and political consequences of population aging.
Project
This book takes a fresh look at the old question how dynamics of social stratification affect political attitudes by beginning with subjective understandings of urban Chinese regarding their own trajectories of social mobility and the resulting changes in social identities. Based on more than 100 in-depth qualitative life-history interviews it develops a typology of social trajectories. Next it investigates the consequences of these dynamic social identities for political attitudes and posits hypotheses that present fresh theoretical starting points. Finally, these hypotheses are being tested against a unique dataset, a standardized questionnaire survey conducted in three Chinese cities in 2015. The empirical analysis demonstrates that preconceived notions of class hold less explanatory power when it comes to understanding Chinese citizens’ political attitudes compared to their subjective status trajectories.

In the debate about China’s future political development many aspects have been discussed with great fervor. But despite its striking peculiarity, China’s demography has not been one of them. Therefore, this study aims to contribute to the debate by bringing up this ignored issue and suggesting ways in which it might have an impact on China’s chanc...

Making sense of the Chinese policy process has been one of the most challenging endeavors for China scholars since the beginning of ‘reform and opening up’. Although a great deal of empirical knowledge has been gathered over the years on policy-making and implementation in many different fields, theorizing on the Chinese policy process has mostly b...

Since late 2013, one of China’s most controversial policies—the one-child policy—has been gradually phased out, culminating in the reorganization of the National Health and Family Planning Commission in early 2018, which saw it drop the family planning part from its name. Has China forgone population intervention and started to pursue a liberal pop...

Among the reasons for contention in contemporary China, environment-related grievances have seen a particularly sharp increase over the past decade. Affecting members of different social groups almost evenly, these grievances are often seen as a potential point of convergence from which a more sustained (even political) challenge to China’s CCP-led...

Francis Fukuyama’s recent works have rekindled interest in the larger questions of political development and have been discussed widely, including in China. This essay argues, first, that his theoretical perspective is squarely rooted in the classical modernization paradigm which is inherently teleological, but it develops its tenets and adds new i...

A few years ago Fligstein and Zhang (2009, p. 41) rightly observed that research on China’s evolving political economy had so far for the most part ignored theoretical lessons offered by the literature on economic sociology. Most studies of political reforms in rural China have concentrated on village elections, pointing out important effects of this democratic mechanism.
