Values are of great importance for society as the existence and continuity of countries, cultures, and individuals is based on values and their transfer to individuals' thinking and doing. In STEM context, values are often neglected, even though especially natural scientific subjects need them in order to sensitize individuals for key issues which...

This research focuses on the evaluation of social interaction and support methods for computer-supported collaborative learning over the period of one semester. Specifically, there are three main topics for investigation: first, the subjective evaluation of social interaction and support methods, second, the students' perceptions of these over time...

The main objective of our research is to get an overview of the practical value education in Germany. Therefore, we investigated 167 projects aiming at value education for children and youths which were launched in Germany in the last five years in different societal levels for socialization to get an overview of the actual value education. We spec...

Collaborative learning is used as a key principle in several approaches for designing virtual learning environments (e.g. CTGV, 2000). This is due to the fact that collaboration seems to foster individual knowledge acquisition (Lou, Abrami, Spence, Poulsen, Chambers, & d’Apollonia, 1996), improve knowledge application (De Corte, 2003), and increase...

Conference Paper
This study investigated differences between experienced and non-experienced European e-tutors in their support of online collaboration. We developed a questionnaire etutors had to fill in to evaluate specific collaborative activities and to answer yes/no-questions regarding their intervention to support these collaborative activities. 78 e-learning...
Conference Paper
In collaborative knowledge construction scenarios, the learner-tutor interaction plays a major role in successful learning. In such contexts, the support provided by the e-tutor is of importance. Even though support methods are required from a theoretical point of view, the question is whether e-tutors effectively employ these methods in practice i...

E-tutoring is a hot topic in the context of virtual learning. As such learning environments become more prevalent in schools, universities or vocational training, providing adequate support for learners is becoming increasingly important – not only for individual, but also for collaborative learning. Therefore, there has been a lot of interest in u...

This paper focuses on the analysis of a virtual seminar in respect to learning processes and learning outcomes of its participants who collaborated over a four month period. To investigate the learning processes in this field study, we analyzed the learners' contributions according to four main learning processes: epistemic activities, construction...

External representations can be powerful for supporting learners in both individual and collaborative learning scenarios. They encourage learners to focus on important instructional elements. In this study, we investigate two different forms of external representations: textually represented collaboration scripts and graphically represented content...

So wurde davon a...

External representations can be powerful to support learners' collaborative knowledge construction. They can focus learners on aspects which are particularly important for the task to solve. In this study, we investigate different styles of pre-structuring shared external representations, a collaboration script and a content scheme. 159 university...

This paper investigates the virtual seminar "Education and Socialization in Early Childhood" at the Ludwig- Maximilians-University, Munich. In this seminar, we focused on the group collaboration, which was evaluated by the students three times over the period of one semester, and on whether this evaluation changed over time. It was assumed that eva...

Interpersonal knowledge of learning partners plays an important role in collaborative learning. Because of the special characteristics of computer-mediated-communication, it is necessary to investigate the formation and the effects of interpersonal knowledge in virtual learning scenarios. This field study evaluates the formation and the effects of...

E-learning is commonly offered in the context of further education. However, employees often do not use the e-learning in the intended way, either because they do not accept it or are not motivated to learn with it. As learning success depends on these two factors, this research focused on determining how different design principles influence accep...

This study examines the support of argumentation in collaborative task solving in videoconferencing. In particular, it investigates the effects of a script (which supported the collaboration) and a content scheme (which fostered the focusing on the content) on transactivity in argumentation and on justifications of single arguments in the learning...

Studies have shown that videoconferences are an effective medium for facilitating communication between parties who are separated by distance. Furthermore, studies reveal that videoconferences are effective when used for distance learning, particularly due to their ability to facilitate complex collaborative learning tasks. However, as in face-to-f...

Article
This article focuses on facilitating learners' collaborative knowledge construction in case-based learning scenarios. The article first describes how case-based learning can promote knowledge acquisition and then discusses the characteristics of videoconferencing in such scenarios. Then we focus our attention on the process and outcomes of the coll...

This paper deals with computer support for collaborative learning environments. Our analysis is based on a moderate constructivist view on learning, which emphasizes the need to support learners instructionally in their collaborative knowledge construction. We will first illustrate the extent to which the computer can provide tools for supporting c...

Schemata are a main antecedent, means and target of knowledge acquisition. For knowledge acquisition and permanent knowledge representation it is necessary to build adequate schemata within the relevant knowledge domain. As antecedent for comprehension constructing a schema on the one hand proceeds unconsciously, yet on the other hand can be foster...

Self-guided collaborative learning with new media is highly demanding for the learners concerning collaboration and knowledge acquisition. Learning in a self-guided and collaborative learning environment means that a group works and solves tasks autonomously. In the context of new media the competence of autonomous and collaborative learning gets i...

This paper deals with collaborative knowledge construction in videoconferencing. The main issue is about how to predict individual learning outcome, in particular how far individual prior knowledge and the collaborative knowledge construction can influence individual learning outcomes. In this context, the influence of prior knowledge and two measu...

The study examines the support of cooperative case-based learning in videoconferencing. In particular, it assesses firstly how content schemes support the application of theoretical concepts on a case and secondly how cooperation scripts foster the interaction within groups of three (triads). 53 triads were randomly assigned to one of four conditio...

New media is becoming increasingly important in university education. The hope is thereby to promote a higher quality of teaching as well as versatile and flexible means of learning and instruction. However, this goal can only be realized, if students accept these new forms of learning and instruction and actively use them to gain knowledge. In ord...
