Physical inactivity, a leading cause of mortality, tracks from childhood to adulthood. Effective interventions to promote physical activity (PA) at a young age are therefore needed. The aim of this scoping review was to provide an overview of school-based interventions for the promotion of PA, cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF), and the reduction of s...
This study explored the relationship between motor abilities and accelerometer-derived measures of physical activity (PA) within preschool-aged children. A total of 193 children (101 girls, 4.2 ± 0.7 years) completed five tests to assess motor abilities, shuttle run (SR), standing long jump, lateral jumping, one-leg stand, and sit and reach. Four P...
Background
Preschool teachers function as role models for children and play an important role in health behavior change interventions targeting children. Objective
To examine levels of health literacy (HL) and status of preschool teachers, as well as lifestyle changes during participation in the 12-month intervention “JolinchenKids—fit and healthy i...
Introduction: Physical inactivity is known as a leading cause of mortality and tracks from childhood to adulthood. Many types of school-based single-component and multicomponent interventions to promote physical activity (PA) have been undertaken and evaluated, with mixed findings overall. Enlarging the intervention areas beyond the school setting...
Background:
To evaluate a multicomponent health promotion program targeting preschoolers' physical activity (PA).
Methods:
PA of children from 23 German daycare facilities (DFs; 13 intervention DFs, 10 control DFs) was measured via accelerometry at baseline and after 12 months. Children's sedentary time, light PA, and moderate to vigorous PA wer...
Background:
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the multi-component health promotion program, JolinchenKids - fit and healthy in daycare, designed to promote physical activity (PA), healthy eating, and mental wellbeing among 3- to 6-year-old preschoolers.
Methods:
For this cluster controlled trial, 62 daycare facilities (DFs) from thirteen...
Background: Regular moderate to vigorous physical activity is essential for maintaining health and preventing the onset of chronic diseases. Both global rates of smartphone ownership and the market for physical activity and fitness apps have grown rapidly in recent years. The use of physical activity and fitness apps may assist the general populati...
Background
Smartphone applications (apps) represent an opportunity to promote physical activity (PA).
Objectives
To explore (1) the extent and sociodemographic differences in utilization of PA and fitness apps, (2) associations between technology acceptance and competence and PA and fitness app use, (3) associations between PA and fitness app use,...

Background:
The uptake, implementation, and maintenance of effective interventions promoting physical activity (PA) and a healthy diet and the implementation of policies targeting these behaviors are processes not well understood. We aimed to gain a better understanding of what health promotion professionals and policy makers think are important f...
Background:
To determine the energy cost of common physical activities in preschoolers and to compare it with the Compendium of Energy Expenditure for Youth (CEEY).
Methods:
In total, 42 children [age: 4.8 (0.8) y; body mass index: 15.3 (2.0) kg/m2; 22 boys] completed 13 common physical activities covering sedentary to vigorous intensities, whil...
Background:
To date, conditions for successfully implementing and maintaining multi-level interventions and policies for the promotion of a balanced diet and physical activity are not well understood from the perspective of stakeholders.
Objective:
The aim of this article is to examine which factors are regarded as facilitating or impeding intro...
Background
The prevention of overweight and obesity during infancy is a highly relevant public health topic given the significant impact of childhood obesity on acute and chronic diseases, general health, and well-being in later stages of life. Apart from the family setting, daycare facilities (DFs) represent a key setting for health promotion amon...
Background
Apart from the family setting, daycare facilities represent a key setting for health promotion among children under the age of 6 years. “JolinchenKids—fit and healthy in daycare” is a new program for health promotion among preschoolers developed by the health insurance AOK. This program was pilot tested and implementation was monitored f...
Background: The transfer of interventions to promote physical activity and a healthy diet after completion of effectiveness trials and the implementation of policies targeting these behaviors are processes not well understood. Qualitative case studies were conducted in five European countries to gain a better understanding of facilitators and barri...
Objective: The aim of this study is to provide a current overview of the effectiveness of school-based interventions on prevention and/or reduction of substance use among children and adolescents aged 5-19 years. Methods: A systematic literature search was conducted in PubMed, Cochrane Library, Campbell Collaboration, NICE and ERIC. Systematic revi...
During their preschool years children establish nutritional and physical activity (PA) habits that may contribute to the development of overweight and obesity.
To examine the evidence for effective interventions promoting healthy eating and PA in childcare settings.
We searched PubMed, the Cochrane Library, and Campbell Collaboration for systematic...

Projects
Project (1)
ACTIPROS is funded by the German Federal Ministry of Health and the main aim of the project is to develop a toolkit of promising interventions that are conducted via schools, targeting children’s physical activity levels and fitness inside and outside of schools.
We are interested in identifying promising interventions at different levels, including multi-component interventions and interventions at the environmental, organisational or structural level (e.g. active travel promotion, referral to community sport clubs, changes to the environment, changes in school policies, interventions incorporating parents/caregivers or other stakeholders).
- We will undertake a literature review to identify promising interventions to promote physical activity and fitness in primary school children
- Establish a local network of stakeholders
- Develop an intervention toolbox
- Simulate application of toolbox with stakeholders and children at pilot schools
- Evaluate individual selection of interventions from the toolbox, analyse changes in children’s physical activity and fitness, and toolbox usability
- Report, publish, and disseminate toolbox and study findings nationally and internationally
A brief description of the research project is available here: https://www.bips.eu/actipros.
