Introduction
I am a marine ecologist with a good field experience in the Mediterranean. I have the chance to dive and watch the Mediterranean closely. I am currently interested in three main fields of marine research: (i) Marine Conservation, especially for the marine megafaune conservation in the Mediterranean; (ii) Applying methods for monitoring of key habitats and species (iii) Marine alien invasions and their impact on biodiversity and ecosystem services.

The study of echinoderms in the Mediterranean region has generated considerable interest and has led to significant advancements in systematic research. Numerous species have been identified, with 35% of them belonging to the Holothuroidea class. This paper provides pertinent information on the echinoderm fauna of the Algerian coast, specifically f...
The study of the Algerian islands' myrmecofauna was undertaken for the first time, particularly on Habibas Island. The inventory of Habibas Island identified 13 ant species. The island's plant formations, such as the xerophilous shrub group and the xerophilous halophilous shrub group, show a significant correlation with species distribution. Some s...
In this study, a multi-biomarker approach is applied to evaluate the biological responses of the black sea urchin Arbacia lixula along the west coast of Algeria. Sea urchins were sampled from six different Algerian West coast sites during two periods (February and August 2018). A series of biomarkers were monitored in the gonads: a glutathione-s-tr...

Climate change is causing an increase in the frequency and intensity of marine heatwaves (MHWs) and mass mortality events (MMEs) of marine organisms are one of their main ecological impacts. Here, we show that during the 2015–2019 period, the Mediterranean Sea has experienced exceptional thermal conditions resulting in the onset of five consecutive...
Savalia savaglia is an ecosystem engineer listed as Near-Threatened by the IUCN, even though effective management and proper monitoring efforts to assess its distribution is still lacking. The record of large, long-established colonies can indicate the occurrence of areas with limited human local pressure. These areas may be considered as proxies f...
Knowledge and understanding of the structure and functioning of key habitats are fundamental elements to the processes of conservation and development of marine biodiversity. The coralligenous and Posidonia meadows are the two main key habitats and hotspots of Mediterranean marine biodiversity. These complex and vulnerable habitats are recognized f...
Between December 2015 and December 2017 a total of 63 sea turtles were recorded as being stranded along the Algerian coast. The loggerhead sea turtle Caretta caretta was the most commonly stranded species (n = 44) (69.8%), followed by the leatherback Dermochelys coriacea (n = 18) (28.6%) and the green turtle Chelonia mydas (n = 1). There was a slig...
This paper is a collection of novel distributional records of 20 species belonging to 8 phyla (Chlorophyta, Rhodophyta, Cni-daria, Ctenophora, Annelida, Mollusca, Arthropoda and Chordata) from 11 Mediterranean countries, namely, Spain: an additional record of the Canary dentex Dentex canariensis is reported from Spain (Valencia), this is the northe...
This long-lived bivalve is endemic to the Mediterranean Sea, where it has a range from Spain to Turkey along the northern and southern coasts and coasts of the Mediterranean islands. Since 2016, a devastating and geographically widespread mass mortality event (MME) has impacted P. nobilis populations throughout the Mediterranean Sea. Previous to th...

Anthropogenic climate change, and global warming in particular, has strong and increasing impacts on marine ecosystems (Poloczanska et al., 2013; Halpern et al., 2015; Smale et al., 2019). The Mediterranean Sea is considered a marine biodiversity hotspot contributing to more than 7% of world’s marine biodiversity including a high percentage of ende...
SWOT Report XIV features an up-to-date, comprehensive map of sea turtle distribution in the Mediterranean, a picture of loggerhead movements in the Atlantic, and expert answers to the most frequently asked questions about sea turtles.
Other articles explore the effects of red tides on turtles, best practices for transporting stranded turtles, and...
A single specimen of the invasive American blue crab Callinectes sapidus was captured at a depth between 0.5 and 1 m, by a fisherman in August 2018, near the estuary of the Oued Z’hor, in the eastern part of the Algerian coast. This report represents the first record of this species from Algerian coastal waters. Callinectes sapidus has widely invad...
Gorgonians (Cnidaria, Octocorallia) are emblematic species of sublittoral communities in the Mediterranean Sea. This taxonomic group play an important ecological role in structuring the habitats, especially in the highly diverse Mediterranean coralligenous outcrops. In the Western Mediterranean Sea Eunicella singularis is found at high densities on...
A Posidonia oceanica meadow in Rachgoun Island, localized using hydroplane transect surveys, has been characterised at its lower limits (-17 m to -18 m) and its upper limits (-0.5 m). The shoot density varies from 482 ± 29 shoot m-2 at the upper limit to 102 ± 7 shoot m-2 at the lower limit. According to UNEP/MAP-RAC/SPA, 2015, the estimated densit...
“Introduced” species of the Algerian coast remains the most undocumented issue in the Mediterranean Sea. Only few studies were dedicated to Introduced species due to the lack of taxonomists. In-depth research on Introduced species along the Algerian coast should provide new data that could explain the spreading mechanisms in the southwestern part o...
The present paper reports the first record of the nudibranch species Felimida purpurea (Risso, 1831) and Dondice banyulensis Portmann & Sandmeier 1960 for the marine Algerian fauna. The specimens of both species were found in September 2015 and April 2016 in the artificial reef of Oran, Algeria.
The bioecological assessement and knowledge of marine fauna and flora play a key role in the establishment and management of MAPs. It provides essentials informations for making management decisions and measuring their impacts. The present study has for main objective the establishment of (i) a sampling strategy adapted to the study site, (ii) a me...
