Introduction
I'm a member of the CPS Department (Culutres, Politics and Society) Università di Torino. I did extensive research on Italian anthropology in colonial Eritrea and Ethiopia, inter-racial sexual relations and racism. I subsequently researched specific aspects of current human mobilities focusing on asylum seekers' and refugees' reception policies and practices, and on the the role of credibility in the refugee status determination procedure. https://unito.academia.edu/BarbaraSorgoni

The book is OPEN ACCESS at: https://www.palgrave.com/gb/book/9783319947488#reviews My chapter focuses on the first level of appeal in the Italian refugee status determination procedure. I use the “credibility issue” as a lens through which to observe how this notion was employed at the tribunals of Bologna and Turin, simultaneously as a core issue...

Starting from the many unique difficulties any international protection procedure poses to all the subjects caught in it, in this essay I explore in particular the issue of (linguistic) translation and the concept of evidence as employed in the asylum procedure. Acknowledging how asylum oral narratives acquire meaning in relation to the specific fo...

In the current public debate on asylum and migration, there is a growing emphasis on the need to protect the most vulnerable - such as minors, pregnant women, LGBTQ+ people and people with disabilities. The concept of ‘vulnerability’ is indeed playing an increasingly central role in migration policies. However, there is no unanimous understanding o...

This article analyzes the role increasingly played by oral testimony in asylum procedures in the years 2011–2013, when the “Arab spring” and the war on Libya caused a sudden increase in the number of migrants entering Italy, as well as a peak in rejections. Drawing from ethnographic cases, I suggest that in Italy this shift was based on assumptions...

Applying for asylum. Narratives, translation, and textualization This essay deals with the initial administrative steps of a refugee status determination procedure in Italy, by focusing on the bureaucratic interaction between an asylum seeker and institutional subjects I could observe during my fieldwork on international protection's procedures. Dr...

In 1938 the regime's popular periodical La Difesa della Razza published the portrait of Saartjie Baartman (a Khoisan woman known to the western world as ‘The Hottentot Venus’) to discourage miscegenation in the empire of Italian East Africa. But by 1938, Italian public and scientific interest in the Hottentot Venus had long faded away. In addition,...

In the past two decades international anthropological critique has focused on issues such as: the discipline's colonial roots, how the concept of culture is embedded in the colonial milieu, the relationship between the texts of academic anthropologists and those produced by the men on the spot, and finally how administrators/ethnographers contribut...
