Educating and testing the values of future citizens is supposed to guarantee their conformity with ‘western’ and ‘modern’ values. By analyzing educational reform discourses in multicultural Luxembourg, the paper aims to challenge these co...

Desires may be viewed as emotions that are structuring and structured by social inequalities. This paper examines how sexual desires may surface in everyday classroom interactions. It argues in particular that anti-racist sex education requires not only an awareness of a racialisation of sexuality but also of the sexualisation of race. Focusing on...

How distancing requirements in the COVID-19 pandemic transformed intimate relationships is under-researched. Against the backdrop of research on the HIV pandemic, the paper departs from the assumption that decreased legitimacy of intimate arrangements and subjective worry about the likeliness of infection may reduce the frequency of multiple sexual...

Else Frenkel-Brunswik (1908–1958) may be known to some as one of the co-authors of the famous study The Authoritarian Personality by Theodor W. Adorno and others. However, as was the case with other Austrian sociologists such as Marie Jahoda and Maria Hertz Levinson, Frenkel-Brunswik’s role in empirical research remained seldom discussed in later r...

Comprehensive approaches to sex education emphasise an integration of the mind and the body via emotions. Drawing on the historiographical shift towards the study of emotions, this paper explores cognitive, bodily and emotional dimensions of sexuality education and social relations. By analysing teachers’ journals in Luxembourg from 1892 to 1939, this paper argues that the teaching press played an active role in the promotion of Luxembourg’s forthcoming cultural identification. Set amid the growing importance of their professionalisation and self- understanding, teachers became recognised as an essential force for the national...

The Psychological is Democratic uses a citizen social science and critical participatory action approach to research the lives and experiences of clients of two women’s counseling centers (Frauen* beraten Frauen* and Peregrina). Women’s counseling centers are included as knowledge communities and clients participate as citizens. An intersectional perspective that aims at including and empowering marginalized women (e.g., migrant, refugee, older, trans women and/or women with disabilities) as citizens allows to situate women’s biographies and experiences within their everyday lives and social context. We position our project within critical participatory action research (CPAR), which aims at promoting solidarity and empowering affected citizens. In ‘participatory contact zones’, different positions and forms of knowledge are discussed and voices most affected by structural inequality are put front and center.
Project
Psychology's Feminist Voices Vienna aims at making the work of feminist psychologists and psychosocial practitioners working in Viennese women's and girls' counseling centers internationally visible. For this purpose, the project team creates biographical profiles of these actors as well as a digital exhibition on women's and girls' counseling in Vienna, which will be published on the international multimedia website "Psychology's Feminist Voices". The biographical profiles will be based on oral history interviews with Viennese feminist psychologists and psychosocial practitioners and with the help of archival materials on their organizations and the history of the women's movement in Vienna, while the digital exhibition will focus on the framework conditions for women's and girls' counseling centers in Vienna. The fact that feminist psychological knowledge was able to develop so strongly in the counseling context in Vienna indicates that there were and are conditions conducive to the founding and institutionalization of women's and girls' counseling centers in Vienna. This contribution of the city of Vienna to the production of feminist psychological knowledge will be elaborated in our digital exhibit and thus made internationally visible.
Project
“The Psychological is Political” aims to analyze how knowledge about the psychological dimensions of gender discrimination developed in Vienna between 1972 and 2000. Through archival research and oral history interviews, we will reconstruct how this knowledge was used and produced in Vienna, in feminist consciousness-raising groups (e.g., AUF Aktion Unabhängiger Frauen and at so-called ‘Volkshochschulen’), in women’s counseling and information centers (e.g., Frauen beraten Frauen, Peregrina, LEFÖ, Miteinander Lernen, …), and at the Department of Psychology at the University of Vienna from 1972 until the the year 2000. In our analysis, we will focus on the institutional and social context of psychological knowledge about the psychological conditions and consequences of gender inequality in order to get a sense of the conditions that have facilitated or hindered the development of knowledge about the psychological dimensions of gender inequality.
