How can psychology transform itself into an inclusive science that engages with the rich cultural diversity of humanity? How can we strive towards a broader and deeper understanding of human behavior that is both generalizable across populations and attentive to its diversity? To address these major questions of our field, relying on scholars from...
Second Ethnicity Declaration in Slovakia´s 2021 Census: New Experiences, New Scientific Challenges. The declaration of a second ethnicity in the 2021 census in Slovakia marks a significant shift in demographic data collection practices. This census was the first of its kind in Slovakia to allow respondents to indicate multiple ethnic identities. Th...
Anti-Gypsyism is a deeply entrenched form of ethnic bias in Europe, characterised by realistic conflict perceptions, social norms approving bias, unacknowledged historical victimisation, and denial of cultural autonomy. Mainstream prejudice reduction interventions may have limited applicability to anti-Gypsyism, because prejudice is normative, henc...
In this article, we explore how Slovak adolescents discursively construct normative contexts of support for refugees from Ukraine as victims of direct violence, and for the Roma, the victims of structural violence. We examine whether and how social norms are reflected in their talk and how they justify their views in the microcontext of focus group...

V sociálnej psychológii a vo výskume medziskupinových vzťahov dlho dominoval prístup, ktorý uprednostňoval porovnania medzi jednou členskou a jednou nečlenskou skupinou, pričom ignoroval možnú príslušnosť jednej a tej istej osoby k viacerým sociálnym kategóriám. Výskumy týkajúce sa viacnásobného kategoriálneho členstva a s tým spojenej intersekcion...

Príbehmi proti predsudkom 2:využitie literárnej fikcie vo vzdelávaní. Vydavateľ: Ústav výskumu sociálnej komunikácie Slovenskej akadémie vied, Bratislava 2023. ISBN 978-80-974522-0-9 (tlačená verzia) 978-80-974522-1-6 (elektronická verzia).
The way politicians talk about minorities institutes the normative context of intergroup relations. We investigated how endorsement of different political discourses predicts donation and collective action intentions by majority members toward the Roma in five European countries. The survey was conducted online using samples demographically similar...
This paper offers an exploration of research production in social psychology as a global endeavor from the point of view of Anglophone social psychologists (N = 232) across 64 countries. We examine social psychologists’ beliefs regarding the difficulties in conducting research in social psychology and the inequalities that they report between the G...
The aim of the study was to evaluate the efficacy of an intervention using indirect intergroup contact for improving intergroup attitudes in schools, in particular anti-Roma prejudice. Vicarious contact—a form of indirect intergroup contact—can be experienced through fictional book characters, who can serve as positive role models in terms of inter...
The study aims to describe the factors that influenced the level of experienced stress and depressive feelings during the second and third waves of the COVID-19 pandemic in Slovakia. We focused on feelings of threat (health and economic threat), life satisfaction, attitudes towards vaccination, and political self-efficacy. We carried out eight wave...
Modern systems of knowledge production reinforce inequalities and coloniality, especially in the Global South. We investigated whether this was the case in contemporary social psychology. We examined manifestations of coloniality of knowledge (in the form of internalized Global North standards and practices) and critical awareness and reflection (h...
Indirect forms of intergroup contact have been shown to reduce prejudice. However, little is known about the factors that can contribute to implementing these methods as interventions in real‐life settings. In this study, we examined whether the students' perception of the facilitator's engagement in carrying out a school‐based vicarious contact in...
V prvej časti príspevku uvádzame vymedzenia pojmov a teoretické pozadie skúmania postojov. Zadaním kľúčových slov do databáz ProQuest, Web of Science a Google Scholar sme identifi...
Cieľom tejto štúdie bolo preskúmať, ako žiaci zo sociálne znevýhodneného prostredia zvládli sociálnu izoláciu počas prvej vlny pandémie koronavírusu a akým problémom čelili v procese dištančného vzdelávania. Tento problém skúmame z pohľadu 314 pedagógov slovenských základných škôl. Participanti vyplnili online pôvodný dotazník - vytvorený autorkami...
Despite numerous efforts of Roma inclusion from various State and non-governmental organisations, segregation and socioeconomic marginalisation of the Roma is still widespread in Slovakia. In this paper, we show what social-psychological factors intervene into the process of intergroup relations change and how they can influence the effectiveness o...
The positive effect of intergroup contact on prejudice towards minorities is well documented. However, the conditions under which contact occurs may sometimes render it ineffective, or even lead to the opposite effect. Even though several studies have recently pointed out the importance of broader context in which contact takes place, such as preva...
We report the process of adapting and validating the BIAS Map (Behaviors from Intergroup Affect and Stereotypes) used to measure perceived stereotypes and related social-structure, emotions, and behavioral tendencies toward the Roma – Slovakia’s most stigmatized ethnic minority group. In two surveys (Studies 1 and 4, n = 705) and group-based (Study...
Response instructions-inviting participants to respond from a certain perspective-can significantly influence the performance and construct validity of psychological measures. Stereotype Content Model (SCM) and then the BIAS map ("behaviors from intergroup affect and stereotypes") were originally developed as universal measures of shared cultural s...
The Roma have been and still are a target of prejudice, marginalization, and social exclusion across Europe, especially in East-Central European countries. This paper focuses on a set of stereotypical, emotional, and behavioral evaluative responses toward Roma people selected as representing the underlying components of anti-Roma bias. Employing ne...

Hlavným cieľom výskumu prezentovaného v tejto správe bolo identifikovať príklady dobrej praxe antidiskriminačných intervencií a zistiť, aké metodické postupy sú ich realizátormi a účastníkmi považované za najúčinnejšie na zmierňovanie predsudkov a zlepšovanie vzťahov medzi majoritou a rómskou minoritou. S využitím poznatkov sociálnej psychológie, k...
National and European policies aim to facilitate the integration of Roma people into mainstream society. Yet, Europe’s largest ethnic group continues to be severely discriminated. Although prejudice has been identified to be at the core of this failure, social psychological research on anti-Gypsyism remains scarce. We conducted a study in six count...

In this article, we explore how social, cultural, and institutional contexts have influenced methodological choices in psychology research in the Czech and Slovak republics (C&SR). Thirty years since the collapse of communism in 1989, many qualitative psychologists are disappointed, feeling their hopes have not been fulfilled. In the current perfor...
Positive intergroup contact and cross-group friendships are known to have numerous benefits for intergroup relations in diverse schools. However, children do not always spontaneously engage in cross-group friendships, choosing rather to spend time with their ingroup peers. Several factors have previously been identified that influence children’s co...
Peer stories about intergroup relations may be an effective tool for prejudice reduction (Liebkind et al., 2014). In this paper we analyze discussions about a real story of a Roma boy. We work with qualitative data from 14 classes from 7 Slovak elementary schools. Pupils tried to find a solution of the problem situation described in the story, wher...
A discussion about the role of schools in preventing extremism and building tolerant intergroup attitudes is
currently ongoing in Slovakia. The first objective of this study was to map (through document and secondary
data analysis) how the topic of intergroup relations is defined in school curricula and how teachers are preparedto deal with this is...

Research has provided evidence that the effects of intergroup contact on prejudice reduction are not limited to the outgroup one has contact with (primary outgroup). Rather, they extend to secondary outgroups uninvolved in the contact situation (secondary transfer effect; Pettigrew, 2009, Social Psychology, 40, 55). We aimed to provide the first em...
Although one of the most severe forms of bias all over Europe, anti-Roma prejudice has been neglected within social psychology. We argue that anti-Roma attitudes need to be recognized as a unique form of prejudice because (a) they reflect socially approved dominant societal norms, (b) intergroup contact increases rather than decreases prejudice, an...

The paper analyses social representations of Roma and refugees during refugee crisis in autumn 2015, based on data from continuous free associations gathered in Slovak high school students (n=80) and from 2 focus groups with Slovak University students (n=19). The analysis draws on Image theory in political psychology (Alexander et al., 2005), the S...
The paper draws on contact hypothesis in social psychology (Allport, 1954; Pettigrew & Tropp, 2006), according to which direct contact is one of the most effective prejudice reduction tools. The paper focuses on high school teachers´ constructions of ethnic diversity in their schools and on its consequences for intergroup relations. 22 qualitative...
The paper discusses the conceptual and methodological challenges of developing measures of stereotypes and prejudice for use in Slovakia. Developing these measures was the first step in a research project aimed at testing the effectiveness of direct and indirect contact interventions to reduce prejudice against stigmatized minorities, particularly...
In this monothematic symposium we discuss the challenges we faced when developing measures of stereotypes and anti-Roma prejudice for use in Slovakia. Developing these measures was the first step in an ongoing research project where the aim is to test the effectiveness of direct and indirect contact interventions in reducing prejudice against stigm...
The aim of this paper is to present international image theory (IIT) that is unknown in Czech and Slovak psychology. This theory is used in political psychology to investigate intergroup stereotypes in the international arena. It is argued that the IIT provides an integrative framework for stereotype content research in the international arena, anc...
The aim of this paper is to analyse discursive constructions of experience from imagined intergroup contact with members of two different outgroups. In the experimental condition, the students of a Bratislava highschool were asked to imagine a positive and cooperative interaction with a new Roma (N=23) or Muslim classmate (N=22). In the control gro...
The paper addresses the question of how to explore Slovak NGO use of new media to foster civic engagement. We argue that it is not possible to focus solely on the NGOs' online communication; that would make sense only in the context of the overall communication. Hence, this paper deals with the borderlands between online and offline communication....
The paper presents the results of two studies concerning two different contexts of community building in Slovak migrants. In the first study, we investigated whether and how the organizations of Slovak migrants in Dublin create off/online spaces for (national) identities practicing and community constructing. The data suggest that these organizatio...
The so called new media are, in comparison to traditional mass media, based on multidirectional information flows and interactivity. This is considered to be the important precondition of their potential for strengthening democracy and stimulating civic participation. How are the new media used by civic activists and associations? What communicatio...
This paper investigates Slovak migrants’ use of new media to build social capital. It draws on data from a pilot study with 36 Slovaks living in the UK, and on content analysis of the main Facebook page for Czechs and Slovaks in the UK. The data suggest that Facebook is used for sharing emotions rather than to build a community and share practical...
The so-called new media are, in comparison to traditional mass media, based on multidirectional information flows and interactivity, this being a pre-condition of their potential for democracy strengthening and civic participation enhancement. Today, they are used by approximately 60% of Slovak citizens, but those are younger, more educated people...

z najobľúbenejších pracovných destinácií slovenských migrantov a migrantiek.

In this paper, three stories are presented, in which we deal with experimental forms of writing research reports, mainly using fiction. With a story of our own research and of our participants - students commuting between Bratislava and Vienna - we open the story of experimentally writing researchers. We think of possibilities and limits of experim...
The chapter deals with motivations and forms of participation of Slovak migrants in the Republic of Ireland and with relations between transnational migration, civic participation and social identity. We focus on (discursive) constructions of migrant community and on the role of active individuals in this process. It is assumed that social identity...
The aim of this text is to present specificity of press analysis as a research method. We briefly describe the critical discourse analysis as a possible approach in this type of research. We focus in more detail on the analysis of headlines. The latter is presented through the examples of three studies. The first focuses on representations of the I...

The paper deals with identity style analysis in Slovak adolescents (N=463), aged 16-19. Berzonsky's Identity Style Inventory was used, distinguishing three basic identity styles: informational, normative, diffuse-avoidant as well as commitment. The informational identity style (influencing personal adaptability, coping strategies and quality of lif...

Past research suggests that a consensual decision made by a heterogeneous group is perceived as more credible than a consensual decision made by a homogeneous group. In this paper we focus on the origine of this heuristic of heterogeneity and on limits of its use. We suggest that the credibility of a collective decision is not only a function of in...
