Numerous studies on political discourse claim that metaphors help politicians to construct coherent arguments to convince their voters. Yet, most of them, with a few notable exceptions, do not adhere to any theory of argumentation. In this paper, we integrate Discourse Dynamic Approach to Metaphor with Inference Anchoring Theory to enhance our unde...

TO DOWNLOAD PAPER, PLEASE CLICK ON THE DOI In the spirit of the pragmatic account of quotation and reporting offered by Macagno and Walton (2017), we outline a systematic pragmatic account of rephrasing. For this purpose, we combine two interrelated methods of inquiry into the variety of uses of rephrase as a persuasive device: (i) the annotation...

Emotion lexicons are useful in research across various disciplines, but the availability of such resources remains limited for most languages. While existing emotion lexicons typically comprise words, it is a particular meaning of a word (rather than the word itself) that conveys emotion. To mitigate this issue, we present the Emotion Meanings data...

Presentation for the article: Propagation of emotions, arousal and polarity in WordNet using Heterogeneous Structured Synset Embeddings
Article

In this paper we present US2016, the largest publicly available set of corpora of annotated dialogical argumentation. The annotation covers argumentative relations, dialogue acts and pragmatic features. The corpora comprise transcriptions of television debates leading up to the 2016 US presidential elections, and reactions to the debates on Reddit....

In this paper we present a novel method for emotive propagation in a wordnet based on a large emotive seed. We introduce a sense-level emotive lexicon annotated with polarity, arousal and emotions. The data were annotated as a part of a large study involving over 20,000 participants. A total of 30,000 lexical units in Polish WordNet were described...

In this article, we present a novel multidomain dataset of Polish text reviews. The data were annotated as part of a large study involving over 20,000 participants. A total of 7,000 texts were described with metadata, each text received about 25 annotations concerning polarity, arousal and eight basic emotions, marked on a multilevel scale. We pres...

Celem niniejszego artykułu jest empiryczne ustalenie różnic leksykalnych w grupach dyskusyjnych reprezentujących odmienne postawy względem aborcji. Chcemy pokazać, w jaki sposób grupy te stosują odmienny opis świata, poprzez wybór odmiennego słownictwa. Materiał został zebrany w grupach dyskusyjnych na portalu społecznościowym Facebook, a analiza z...

In response to recommendations to redefine statistical significance to P ≤ 0.005, we propose that researchers should transparently report and justify all choices they make when designing a study, including the alpha level.

Governments around the world are increasingly utilising online platforms and social media to engage with, and ascertain the opinions of, their citizens. Whilst policy makers could potentially benefit from such enormous feedback from society, they first face the challenge of making sense out of the large volumes of data produced. In this article, we...

Debating technologies, a newly emerging strand of research into computational technologies to support human debating, offer a powerful way of providing naturalistic, dialogue-based interaction with complex information spaces. The full potential of debating technologies for dialogical argument can, however, only be realized once key technical and en...

The Argument Web is maturing as both a platform built upon a synthesis of many contemporary theories of argumentation in philosophy and also as an ecosystem in which various applications and application components are contributed by different research groups around the world. It already hosts the largest publicly accessible corpora of argumentation...

Governments are increasingly utilising online platforms in order to engage with, and ascertain the opinions of, their citizens. Whilst policy makers could potentially benefit from such enormous feedback from society, they first face the challenge of making sense out of the large volumes of data produced. This creates a demand for tools and technolo...

In the paper we aim to describe multimodal communication in career coaching sessions using recorded natural, face-to-face interactions and corpus techniques. We look on how the specific context of communication influences the lexical and gestural behaviour of speakers in the dialogues between a professional career coach and a participant. Main topi...

Project
In terms of fundamental research, the project’s interdisciplinary nature (i) provides the first empirically-driven, theoretically-informed and experimentally-validated account of the speech act of rephrase and (ii) constitutes the first interdisciplinary study to combine corpus and experimental methodologies in speech act theoretic pragmatics. We expect to provide an exhaustive cartography of the nature, structures and effects of rephrase in argumentative discourse. We anticipate that our model of rephrase (and its misuse) will yield new rephrase corpora building guidelines ready for implementation in AI argument technologies (argument mining and argument analytics) and that (mis)uses of rephrase will be shown to be rhetorically effective by virtue of their various cognitive advantages. In terms of scientific impact, AMoRe will demonstrate the relevance of interdisciplinary research to (i) deepen our understanding of the speech act of rephrase, and, more broadly, (ii) investigate argumentative phenomena at the interface of language and cognition, with clear benefits for all scientific communities AMoRe brings together (linguists, philosophers, argumentation theorists, psychologists). In terms of societal impact, the project promises to make accessible novel resources for digital literacy and critical analysis of public discourse, which are invaluable in the exercise of citizenship and public deliberation.
