This project is supported by Royal Academy of Engineering’s Transforming Systems through Partnership scheme, Solid waste management plays a crucial role in terms of the appearance of the city together with the protection of human health. Conducting systematic solid waste processing or disposal activities not only contributes to the protection of the environment but also provides an economic contribution to the city. Reducing costs can only be achieved by optimising container locations and routes of garbage collection vehicles. However, location and route optimisation are not enough for an efficient solid waste collection system. Seasonal changes have an impact on the production of solid waste by residents. Furthermore, the amount of solid waste production of a region changes substantially during the days of events and activities. Moreover, the traffic density between the area where solid waste collected and the waste transfer centre may create a disruption of service and cost. In these cases, one-time optimisation would be insufficient and a dynamic optimisation would be needed. Solid waste management (SWM) is a major problem for many urban bodies in Turkey, where urbanization, industrialization and economic growth have resulted in increased municipal solid waste. Given the changing nature of waste generation, it is critically important that a much more sophisticated logistics management system be in place to reduce the impact on the environment and overall operating costs. One of the key features of the logistics system should be the identification of an optimal number of solid waste collection points to avoid excessive accumulation of waste and to ensure the efficient transfer of waste. This study aims to develop a system which dynamically optimizes the locations of underground and aboveground containers and the routes of waste collection vehicles for Maltepe district of Istanbul. The developed system provides economic contribution by reducing environmental protection and waste collection costs.
