Introduction
My research is on Islamic politics and social movements, particularly in Indonesia and Malaysia. I'm the author of "Islamic Education in Indonesia and Malaysia: Shaping Minds, Saving Souls" (Routledge, 2018). The book won the 2019 ICAS Book Prize for Colleagues' Choice Award for Social Sciences in Leiden. I also co-edited (with Rosalie Metro and Will Brehm) "Education and Power in Contemporary Southeast Asia" (Routledge, 2023). I received my PhD from the Australian National University.

The thesis explores the nature of the Islamic education systems in Indonesia and Malaysia and the different approaches taken by these states in managing these systems. Despite their close geographic and cultural ties, the two countries have dramatically different Islamic education, with that in Indonesia being relatively decentralized and discursiv...
This paper compares state Islamic orthodoxy in Indonesia and Malaysia by using Islamic education curriculum for senior high schools as my case study. I argue that Malaysian Islamic Development Agency (Jabatan Kemajuan Islam Malaysia, JAKIM) in Malaysia has been more successful in exerting its orthodox values in the Islamic education curriculum than...
This article aims to look at the surprisingly positive results of the Pan Malaysian Islamic Party (Parti Islam Se-Malaysia, PAS) in Malaysia's recent 14 th General Elections (GE14) and offers an analysis why the party had managed to defy the expectation of many pundits and polling agencies leading up to the GE14. While it is commonly agreed that mo...
This study critically examines the ideology shaping Malaysian television media during Malaysia's 2022 transition to its Unity Government. Focusing on Astro Awani and Berita RTM, a content analysis of visual news elements reveals a clear ideological bias that privileges the ruling coalition. Both networks predominantly featured visuals from governme...
When a city or state government undertakes a large-scale development project, such governments may initiate or support activities that foster participation of the inhabitants.
Dominant approaches to understanding Islamist politics tend to assume a uniform polity. Most notably, inclusion–moderation hypotheses presume Islamist parties are simply in or out: that the lure of office persuades radical Islamist groups to moderate their behaviour and ideologies to participate in elections. We suggest a different dynamic, in whic...
Whenever the Islamist party PAS comes to power in Terengganu, its political agenda has been to combine populist-type development programmes with the wish to turn Terengganu into a shariah-compliant state. Terengganu’s state budget is however heavily dependent on the federal government, to the tune of 80–90 per cent. This hinders the state governmen...
It is the aim of this article to assess Bersatu’s chances of going it alone in the event that Perikatan Nasional (PN) implodes. Unlike its current coalition partner Parti Islam Se-Malaysia (PAS), Bersatu has yet to compete on its own and therefore does not have a track record to which it can refer. At the moment, Bersatu is dependent on PAS’s grass...
This article argues that there are four conditions that create a conducive political climate allowing civil society and the media to hold the government accountable during the time of pandemic (2020–2021) i.e., the diagonal accountability: 1) the undemocratic formation of the Muhyiddin Yassin's government that lacked public mandate, which in turn m...
Ulama (religious scholars) have always been at the core of Malaysia’s Pan-Malaysia Islamic Party (PAS), and their leadership has been seen as a necessity for the party to keep to its political agenda. PAS may accommodate leaders and members with different backgrounds, but the top leadership positions are dominated by those versed in Islamic studies...
The Islamic political party Pan-Malaysia Islamic Party (Parti Islam Se-Malaysia, PAS) has governed the state of Kelantan on the northeastern coast of peninsular Malaysia for most of Malaysia’s post-independence history.• Until 2020, PAS functioned as an opposition party at the federal level, going against the government led by its long-time nemesis...
The recently concluded 15 th General Election in Malaysia saw a better-than-expected performance for the Perikatan Nasional (PN) coalition, which managed to win 74 seats, making it the second strongest after the Pakatan Harapan (PH) which gained 81 seats. PN's strong performance came at the expense of Barisan Nasional (BN), especially UMNO, particu...

How political parties finance their operations is not well regulated in Malaysia. There is no specific law that oversees the myriad ways political parties raise funds and to what purpose they are used. This stands in contrast to neighboring Indonesia and the Philippines, where there are laws that regulate party financing. As a result, corruption in...
It was a tumultuous year for Malaysia. As the country was experiencing the onset of the first wave of COVID-19 in late February 2020, the majority coalition, the Alliance of Hope (Pakatan Harapan) that formed the federal government at the time broke apart due to defections, symbolized by the so-called Sheraton Move. A new government led by the Nati...
