Introduction
Current INPhINIT ”la Caixa” doctoral fellow at the Marine and Environmental Sciences Centre, Madeira (MARE-Madeira). My PhD aims to further our understanding of how anthropogenic pressures and oceanographic variability impact the occurrence of marine apex predators in the Madeiran archipelago.

Marine megafauna serve valuable ecological and economical roles globally, yet, many species have experienced precipitous population declines. The significance of marine megafauna is particularly evident in Macaronesia, a complex of oceanic archipelagos in the Northeast Atlantic Ocean. Macaronesian islands provide important habitats for marine megaf...
Effective conservation strategies are founded by baseline information on abundance and diversity estimates. Method choice can influence the success of baseline surveys as method performance is variable and needs to be selected based on habitat and taxa. Here, we assess the suitability of unoccupied aerial vehicle (UAV) surveys, specifically multi-r...
Microplastics (<5 mm) are a ubiquitous marine pollutant which are highly bioavailable to marine organisms across all trophic levels. Marine predators are especially vulnerable to microplastic pollution through direct and indirect ingestion (e.g., trophic transfer) due to their high trophic position. In particular, oceanic islands are more susceptib...
We describe the first observations of aggregation behavior in the endangered smoothhound, Mustelus mustelus, on Madeira Island (NE Atlantic) across six consecutive years. These observations contribute to the understanding of habitat use by early life stages of this endangered species, with regional implications for conservation efforts.
The Starry Weever (Trachinus radiatus) is recorded for the first time in the Madeira archipelago in the Northeast Atlantic Ocean. Baited Remote Underwater Video (BRUV) surveys conducted between June and August 2022 showed the presence of T. radiatus around the island of Deserta Grande. The species is likely to be present in other areas of the archi...

A continuing impediment to the taxonomy of the reticulate whipray Himantura spp. species complex is the absence of a type specimen for H. uarnak (Gmelin [ex Forsskål], 1789). Here, reticulate whipray specimens were sampled from the Jeddah region in the Red Sea, the assumed type locality of H. uarnak, and characterized genetically at the cytochrome-...
The management of bonefishes Albula spp. has been hindered by unresolved species distributions and a general lack of life history information. We provide the first genetic species identifications of Albula spp. from the northern Indian Ocean. The roundjaw bonefish Albula glossodonta was documented in the Red Sea, and the smallscale bonefish A. olig...
A serious impediment to the taxonomy of the reticulate whipray Himantura spp. species complex has been the absence of a type specimen for P. Forsskål’s H. uarnak . Here, reticulate whipray specimens were sampled from the Jeddah region, the assumed type locality of H. uarnak , and characterized genetically at the cytochrome-oxidase subunit 1 ( CO1 )...
Years of unregulated fishing activity have resulted in low abundances of elasmobranch species in the Saudi Arabian Red Sea. Coastal populations of sharks and rays in the region remain largely understudied and may be at risk from large-scale coastal development projects. Here we aim to address this pressing need for information by using fish market,...
A KAUST SeaGlider was attacked by a shark at approximately 09:10 Arabian Standard Time at a depth of 56.39m off the coast of Duba, Saudi Arabia. Seagliders are long-range autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs) that can profile the ocean for many months at a time at a fraction of the cost of traditional methods. Shark attacks are a threat to the inte...
JR17006 was the third (and final) of a series of cruises for the Arctic PRIZE project in 2018. The first was in January 2018 studying the conditions during the Polar Night. The second was in April/May 2018 studying the spring bloom and JR17006 was the summer cruise. The project aimed to investigate the relationships between the physical, optical, c...
Photographic identification of unique patterning on individual animals within a species is a nonintrusive and powerful technique for gathering information on population size, movement, behaviour, and life-history specifications for wild populations. Photo-ID is dependent on reliably reidentifying individuals through visible marks which are stable o...
Coral species are commonly thought of in terms of shallow-water tropical ecosystems, even though more than 65% of recognised coral species inhabit waters below 50m. Cold-water coral (CWC) ecosystems are valued for being key habitats that provide protection, reproduction and feeding for many species, including commercial fish species. Threats to the...
The permanency and individuality of visible markers and patterns support photo identification as an effective method for non-invasive monitoring of vulnerable species. The Loch Sunart to the Sound of Jura MPA was created in 2014 for the protection of the Critically Endangered common skate (Dipturus cf.intermedia). Here we show the long-term stabili...
This report describes the events that occurred during DY052, a cruise on the RRS Discovery that sailed Glasgow to Glasgow from June 7 to June 24, 2016.
The main objective of the cruise was to occupy the annually repeated hydrographic section of the Extended Ellett Line (EEL). The EEL runs from the Sound of Mull via Rockall to Iceland. The EEL is f...

As part of ongoing studies, we aim to introduce different types of surveys and research tools to further understand how anthropogenic pressures (e.g. noise, marine litter, marine traffic) and environmental variables affect the distribution and presence of large marine predator species (e.g. cetaceans, seals, sharks) in the pelagic waters surrounding the Madeira archipelago.
This project is part of a PhD thesis granted to A.J. McIvor, supported by a fellowship from ”la Caixa” Foundation (ID 100010434).
