The Critically Endangered gharial ( Gavialis gangeticus ) residing within Bardiya National Park (BNP) in Nepal constitutes the sixth major sub‐population of this unique lineage; however, this population is not well studied. A 46 km protected stretch of the Babai River and a 60 km stretch of the Karnali River in and around BNP were surveyed for ghar...

The Chinese pangolin Manis pentadactyla is categorized as Critically Endangered on the IUCN Red List but little is known about its status in Nepal. Although indirect sign surveys have reported its presence in several community forests in Kavrepalanchok district, no photographic or video evidence has previously been documented. We used camera traps...

The Rapti and the Narayani Rivers in and around the Chitwan National Park provide critical habitat to gharial (Gavialis gangeticus). Gabion walls have been built in several places along the banks of these rivers to protect against river bank erosion, and reduce risk of flooding of settlements. While construction of gabion walls is important to prot...

The gharial Gavialis gangeticus is a Critically Endangered crocodilian currently known from only 14 disjunct locations in Nepal and India. The protected stretch of the Babai River in Bardia National Park, Nepal, is home to one of the six subpopulations of gharials that have exhibited recent evidence of reproduction. However, there is limited inform...

Gharials, large crocodilians found only in South Asia, are widely seen as a flagship species for river conservation in Nepal, especially in Chitwan National Park, where a headstart program has supplemented the population since 1981. The population has shown signs of recovery only in the last decade, so continued monitoring of population trends is v...

Waterholes play a crucial role in wildlife habitats, serving as a determining factor in maintaining a healthy ecosystem for wildlife. In the core area of the park, a total of 179 artificial waterholes were constructed to provide water to various wildlife species, with 24 of them selected for this study. The research utilized camera trapping, signs...

The gharial (Gavialis gangeticus) is a Critically Endangered species found in Nepal and India. In Nepal, gharials are distributed in Chitwan and Bardia National Parks. Gharials are highly threatened due to various and severe anthropogenic activities. In this study, we assess the attitude, perception and willingness of a range of stakeholders living...

Crop raiding and livestock predation are major conservation problems throughout most protected areas in Nepal, including the Khaptad National Park (KNP). However, no information exists on the extent of crop raiding, livestock predation, and animal attacks among villages surrounding KNP. We conducted a survey of 304 households in 30 villages in four...

Indian pangolin is distributed throughout South Asia, from eastern Pakistan to much of India, south of the Himalayas, southern Nepal, Bangladesh, and Sri Lanka. It is classified as an Endangered (EN) species, listed under Appendix I of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES). Although its populati...

Gharial (Gavialis gangeticus) is a Critically Endangered crocodilian species whose abundance in Nepalese rivers is low due to the threat they face. We estimated gharial abundance in the Rapti River, one of the major rivers in Chitwan National Park (CNP) holding the largest numbers of gharials in Nepal. The Rapti River, running across the CNP, was d...

Supplementation of wild populations of the Critically Endangered Gharial Gavailis gangeticus with individuals reared in captivity is a widely used conservation management tool in Nepal and India, although its efficacy is uncertain. Measuring post-release growth in Gharial can provide valuable information on acclimation of captive-reared Gharial to...

There are two species of pangolins –Chinese (Manis pentadactyla) and Indian (M. crassicaudata) – in Nepal. Despite being one of the most illegally traded group of mammals in the world, there is scant information on pangolin trade in Nepal. We synthesized nation-wide information on pangolin seizures for 2015–2020 period to elucidate extent and netwo...

The Chinese Pangolin (Manis pentadactyla) is a “Critically Endangered” insectivorous mammal. There is a lack of information on the ecology, distribution and behavior of this species in Nepal, even though community forests in the Midhills Region of Nepal are considered to be prime habitats for the species. We conducted an ecological assessment of th...

We conducted a detailed study in comparing physico-chemical parameters of glacier melt water between two years (2016 & 2019) in upstream sites with an elevation ranging from 4100 m to 3550 m above sea level of Ponkar glacier, Manang district, Nepal. We conducted onsite testing of physical parameter like pH, electrical conductivity, total dissolved...

We studied nesting and reproductive ecology of critically endangered Gharials (Gavialis gangeticus) in the Narayani and Rapti rivers as well as ex situ breeding facilities in the Chitwan National Park in Nepal from 2001 to 2017. We located a total of 151 Gharial nests over 17 yr in sand banks along the Narayani (n = 94 nests) and Rapti (n = 57 nest...

The Smooth-coated otter Lutrogale perspicillata is one among three species of otters found in Nepal. Although L. perspicillata has been classified as 'Endangered' nationally, there is a serious lack of information on various aspects of its natural history in Nepal including the Bardiya National Park (NP). We surveyed 118 km of the Karnali and Babai...

Chinese Pangolins (Manis pentadactyla) are Critically Endangered and one of the most illegally traded mammals globally. We generated first COI sequences from five individuals of this species from Nepal. BLASTn search of our 600 bp sequences at GenBank showed pair-wise identity between 99.17% and 100% to M. pentadactyla. There were three haplotypes...

Gharials Gavialis gangeticus have been reared in ex situ facilities in the Gharial Conservation and Breeding Center (GCBC) in Chitwan National Park of Nepal since the 1980s. There remains a paucity of detailed information concerning their growth rates, particularly with respect to season. We randomly selected 20 gharials (45 months old) in the GCBC...

A study of the melt water draining from Ponkar glacier, Bhimthang Valley, Nepal was performed to determine various physico-chemical parameters prevailing along 16 sampling sites consisting of moraine dammed, Ponkar Lake at 4100 metres to downstream glaciated stream at 1930 metre. Temperature, pH and Electrical conductivity were recorded on site and...

In Nepal, gharials (Gavialis gangeticus) currently occur in the Narayani and Rapti Rivers in Chitwan National Park (CNP) and the Karnali and Babai Rivers in Bardia National Park (BNP). Nesting is known to occur in the Naryani-Rapti River system, but there is no current confirmed evidence of gharials nesting in the Karnali and Babai Rivers. Herein,...

In high school (1st to10th grade) educational system in Nepal, course curriculums for ‘Science’ classes are largely lecture based and provide very limited exposure to students to scientific method and experiments. We designed this workshop to address the lack of understanding of scientific method in high school students from various schools in the...

We tested microsatellites that were developed for the saltwater crocodile (Crocodylus porosus) for cross-species amplification and to provide an estimate of inter- and intraspecific variation among four species of Neotropical crocodiles (C. rhombifer, C. intermedius, C. acutus, and C. moreletii). Our results indicated that with the exception of 2 l...

Population genetic studies provide information on the various aspects of genetics of species and therefore have a wide spread application in conservation research. This study assesses the genetic diversity, population subdivision, and genetic structure within the populations of the American crocodile (Crocodylus acutus) from eight localities in thr...

Question (1)
Question
Our team estimated population size of gharials (Gavialis gangeticus) in two rivers in Nepal. We surveyed both rivers only once and estimated population size employing direct sighting method. We want to test if there is a statistically significant difference between gharial populations in these two rivers. What would be an appropriate statistical test that would fit our purpose? Please, kindly provide your inputs.
Thank you!
