The relationship between vitamin deficiency and the development of oral diseases in elderly patients with dementia is an intriguing research topic with significant clinical implications. Dementia, a progressive neurodegenerative disorder, often coexists with malnutrition, including vitamin deficiencies. It is estimated that approximately 80% of dementia patients have one or more nutritional deficiencies.
Dementia-related oral problems are associated with a decline in cognitive function, leading to poor oral hygiene practices, increased sugar consumption, and difficulty maintaining a balanced diet. Moreover, individuals with dementia often have difficulty swallowing, leading to oral infections and dental decay.
The investigation of this relationship is critical for several reasons:
Early diagnosis and intervention can help prevent further cognitive decline and improve the quality of life for individuals with dementia.
Proper nutrition and dental care can mitigate the severity of dementia-related oral problems, helping patients retain their natural teeth and enjoy a better quality of life.
The identification of nutritional deficiencies in individuals with dementia can aid in the development of targeted interventions to address the specific needs of this vulnerable population.
By understanding the relationship between dementia, vitamin deficiency, and oral disease, researchers can develop more effective strategies to improve the health and well-being of elderly patients with dementia.
Despite the high prevalence of smokeless tobacco (SLT) use among adults in Bangladesh, SLT was not included in the Tobacco Control Law till 2013. Information on SLT use among Bangladeshi people is inadequate for policymaking and implementing effective control measures. Evidence suggests that in Bangladesh, SLTs range from unprocessed to processed or manufactured products including Sada Pata, Zarda, Gul, and Khoinee. Over 27% of Bangladeshi adults aged 15 years and older use SLT in one form or other. SLT use is associated with age, sex, education, and socioeconomic status. SLT consumption has reportedly been associated with increased prevalence of heart diseases, stroke, and oral cancer and led to around 320,000 disability adjusted life years lost in Bangladesh in 2010. No cessation service is available for SLT users in public facilities. Compared to cigarettes, taxation on SLT remains low in Bangladesh. The amendment made in Tobacco Control Law in 2013 requires graphic health warnings to cover 50% of SLT packaging, ban on advertisement of SLT products, and restriction to sale to minors. However, implementation of the law is weak. As the use of SLT is culturally accepted in Bangladesh, culturally appropriate public awareness program is required to curb SLT use along with increased tax and cessation services.22According to the report of TABINAJ (Tamak Birodhi Nari Jote) on Sunday 30 September 2018 (Anti-tobacco Alliance of Women)-Bangladesh is one of the South Asian countries, where 80% of all smokeless tobacco are consumed as these are integral to culture, being incorporated in their traditional values, spirituality, beliefs, festivals, marriage ceremonies, lifestyle, rituals and popular entertainment.
