Sunburn is a common issue in fresh fruit production, but it has been rarely studied in the wine industry. A survey was carried out in the Itata Valley, Ñuble Region, Chile to estimate the level of incidence and severituy of sunburn in "Moscatel of Alexandria." Results showed that 40% of collected berries were at least moderately affected by sunburn...
Crimson Seedless is one of the most important table grape cultivars in the world, but often exhibits uneven berry color when grown in warm climates. Deficit irrigation is used extensively by growers during the ripening phase to advance fruit maturity and color, but there is a lack of information about the relationship between irrigation practices a...
Regulated deficit irrigation treatments were applied in five commercial kiwifruit orchards for two consecutive seasons. Results showed improvements in fruit quality and important water savings at the end of the growing season. This study received funding from the "Gobierno Regional de O'Higgins" and was executed by the "Centro de Evaluación Rosario...
Kiwifruit is widely recognized as a fruit crop sensitive to water stress due to low stomatal regulation. Unfortunately, many of the most important kiwifruit producing areas have been affected by increasing water scarcity due to climate change. Protected cultivation may be used in kiwifruit vines not only to mitigate water stress and potential reduc...
Chile is one of the main producers of kiwifruit (Actinidia spp) in the world. However, the predicted reduction in water availability and the increase in both air temperature and evaporative demand in many producing areas may jeopardize the Chilean kiwifruit industry. Protected cultivation and deficit irrigation have been progressively gained in pop...
The super high-density (SHD) production system has recently been introduced to the Chilean European plum (Prunus domestica L.) industry, but the potential of applying regulated deficit irrigation (RDI) in this system remains unexplored. As irrigation water availability in Chile has been strongly jeopardized by climate change, there is an urgent nee...
Orange peel, a physiological disorder, has been reported in Chilean sweet cherries (Prunus avium (L.) L.) after 35-45 d under modified atmosphere packaging (MAP). The ontogeny of the disorder is unknown, and preharvest factors have not been thoroughly investigated. This study involved two experiments to elucidate the association between environment...
The Itata Valley is located in south-central Chile. It is one of the oldest valleys with rainfed viticulture, hillside vineyards, and head-trained vines. It is the valley with the largest number of vineyards in Chile, averaging about 2 ha, mostly planted with patrimonial cultivars due to their importance in producing wine during the colonial period...
Background and goals
Sunburn is one of the most important problems in fresh fruit production, but little information exists about its effect on the winegrape industry.
The objective of this study was to physically and chemically characterize the severity of sunburn in berries from traditionally farmed Muscat of Alexandria vineyards.
Methods and k...
The use of covers to protect blueberry orchards from adverse weather events has increased due to the variability in climate patterns, but the effects of rain covers and netting materials on yield and fruit quality have not been studied yet. This research evaluated the simultaneous effect of an LDPE plastic cover, a woven cover, and netting material...

This research evaluated the simultaneous effect of LDPE plastic cover, woven cover and netting materials on en...
There is a lack of information on how protected cultivation alters plant and soil responses to water stress. The objective of this study was to understand the influence of the covering material on drought tolerance responses and soil water content in the effective rooting zone in two promising new cultivars grown under contrasting climatic conditio...
Photo-selective colored nets have been used as a tool to reduce climatic stress and improve yields in horticultural crops, but there is no knowledge regarding responses of hazelnut crops under these nets. The objective of this research was to study the influence of photo-selective nets on the microclimate, physiological characteristics of leaves, a...
Deficit irrigation (RDI) is a cultural practice that has gained important attention during the last years due to water scarcity. Unfortunately, the use of RDI is limited in fresh-fruit production, as severely water-stressed plants can exhibit large reductions in yield and fruit quality. In this opinion article, I summarize what I think are the most...
Netting has been widely used in recent years to protect apple fruit from solar injury. There is little information on the biochemical aspects underlying the effectiveness of netting against sunburn in apples. The objective of this study was to quantify the effects of netting on polyphenols, anthocyanins, and antioxidant activity in apples with diff...
Surface renewal (SR) is a biometeorological technique that uses high-frequency air temperature measurements above a plant canopy to estimate sensible heat flux. The sensible heat flux is then used to estimate latent heat flux as the residual of a surface energy balance equation. SR previously relied on calibration against other methods (e.g., eddy...

Sunburn is a key issue in fresh fruit production, but there is little information regarding its impact in the wine grape industry. Head-trained vines may exhibit high incidence and severity of sunburn due to the close proximity of clusters to the warm soil. This is especially relevant in semiarid regions, which are characterized by high solar radia...
The Itata valley is one of the most well-known viticultural areas of Chile. Despite its importance, there is little research about how viticultural practices and climate conditions can affect fruit quality. In this context, the presence of sunburn in berries is considered as a major problem by local grapegrowers. However, no study has quantified or...
Linalool is a monoterpene, which exhibits floral and spicy aromas as well as a variety of pharmacological effects, including antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and cardiovascular. Wine flavor is highly dependent on the chemical compounds of berries. The objective of this study was to evaluate the concentration of volatile compounds, especially linaloo...
Adoption of permanent cover crops and no-till systems is considered integral to achieving the California state air quality standards regulating airborne particulate matter, as indicated in Senate Bill 656. Imposition of such management techniques in a vineyard could create competition with vines for limited water resources. We evaluated the effects...
Fruit uniformity is generally regarded as an essential quality parameter in winegrape production. Deficit irrigation and cluster thinning are popular techniques to improve fruit quality, but there is little empirical information on how these practices influence fruit uniformity in the field. Deficit irrigation and targeted cluster thinning treatmen...
Advanced micrometeorological methods have become increasingly important in soil, crop, and environmental sciences. For many scientists without formal training in atmospheric science, these techniques are relatively inaccessible. Surface renewal and other flux measurement methods require an understanding of boundary layer meteorology and extensive t...
Permanent cover crops are commonly used in vineyard floor management because of their beneficial effects to soil and vine health, but studies evaluating their competitive effects on vines have been conducted primarily in nonirrigated vineyards. Future air quality regulations could mandate the use of no-till floor management practices in California'...
Ripeness uniformity and berry size are thought to be key determinants of fruit quality, and hence crop price, for winemaking, but there is little objective data to confirm the relationship between both variables and crop price. In order to test for a relationship between crop price and uniformity, three California Cabernet Sauvignon vineyards each...
