A terahertz time-domain spectroscopy experiment is discussed where the few-cycle terahertz pulses are generated through optical rectification and detected using electro-optic sampling and a lock-in technique. It is demonstrated theoretically and experimentally that the measured amplitude may be enhanced if the terahertz signal is modulated by spinn...
The full analytical solutions for plane terahertz waves generated through optical rectification in a slab of a nonlinear optical material are calculated. Terahertz dispersion, absorption of both optical and terahertz waves, and multiple reflections are considered. The results are valid for an arbitrary difference between the optical group index and...
In a recent article [ Opt. Lett. 34, 2507 (2009) ], the authors concluded that the imaginary part of the complex conductivity σ of an AlInN film was negative. However, this result was obtained using an approximation that is not applicable in this case. Using the correct equation, the data can be well described with a positive imaginary part of σ.
A Comment on the Letter by N. N. Zinov'ev, A. S. Nikoghosyan, and J. M. Chamberlain, Phys. Rev. Lett. 98, 044801 (2007)10.1103/PhysRevLett.98.044801. The authors of the Letter offer a Reply.
The sensitivity of electro-optic sampling of terahertz pulses may be doubled for beams of a finite size, since the terahertz field alters the probe beam diffraction and thus the Gouy phases of both polarisations differently.
We present a versatile terahertz time-domain spectrometer which allows reflection measurements at normal incidence and double pass transmission measurements in a single experimental setup. Two different modes for transmission measurements are demonstrated for precise measurements of transparent high or low refractive index materials, respectively....
We demonstrate that the hydrogen-bonded organic nonlinear optical crystals COANP, OH1, and DANPH allow a highly efficient generation of a gap-free terahertz spectrum. COANP at the Ti:sapphire laser wavelength of 776 nm and OH1 at a wavelength of 1460 nm show a higher conversion efficiency than the respective benchmark materials ZnTe and DAST. An un...
This presentation shows that for terahertz and probe pulses with finite diameters, an additional phase term appears that has to be added to and may thus significantly enhance the sensitivity of electro-optic (EO) sampling. To summarise, the signal measured in EO sampling of terahertz pulses also depends on some properties of the setup (diameter of...
Optical rectification of sub-picosecond laser pulses in a nonlinear optical crystal is a widely used method to generate broadband THz pulses. The standard crystal used with Ti:sapphire lasers is the inorganic semiconductor ZnTe. This paper demonstrates that the organic hydrogen-bonded crystal 2-cyclooctylamino-5-nitropyridine (COANP) is a more effi...
We demonstrate highly efficient generation and detection of broadband THz pulses in the organic nonlinear optical crystal OH1. We achieved a photon conversion efficiency of 11 percent through optical rectification of 45 muJ laser pulses.
The THz generation efficiency in two new stilbazolium salts pumped by laser sources at telecommunication wavelengths is increased compared to DAST, the benchmark material for this application.
In electro-optic sampling of terahertz pulses with a finite diameter, the probe pulse is subject to a lensing effect. The altered diffraction leads to an additional phase shift Δ η in the far field compared to the case of a plane wave. It is demonstrated that Δ η is in the same order of magnitude as the direct electro-optic phase shift at the exit...
Broadband terahertz pulses have been generated in 2-cyclooctylamino-5-nitropyridine (COANP) single crystals by optical rectification of 150 fs laser pulses from an amplified Ti:sapphire laser operating at 776 nm. Due to better velocity-matching and a higher figure of merit, COANP allows more efficient terahertz generation between 0.2 and 2.4 THz th...
Broadband THz pulses have been generated in 2-[3-(4-hydroxystyryl)-5,5-dimethylcyclohex-2-enylidene]malononitrile (OH1) by optical rectification of sub-picosecond laser pulses. We show that OH1 crystals allow velocity-matched generation and detection of THz frequencies in the whole range between 0.3 and 2.5 THz for a pump laser wavelength range fro...
We have measured the optical properties of 4-N,N-dimethylamino- 4 ′ - N ′ -methyl-stilbazolium 2,4,6-trimethylbenzenesulfonate (DSTMS), a highly nonlinear organic crystal, in the terahertz (THz) spectral range. The conditions for efficient THz pulse generation through optical rectification of near-infrared pulses have been calculated and confirmed...
We investigate a configurationally locked polyene (CLP) crystal 2-(3-(4-hydroxystyryl)-5,5-dimethylcyclohex-2-enylidene)ma- lononitrile (OH1) containing a phenolic electron donor, which also acts as a hydrogen bond donor. The OH1 crystals with orthorhombic space group Pna21 (point group mm2) exhibit large second-order nonlinear optical figures of m...
New organic nonlinear optical verbenone-based triene crystals have been developed, investigated and compared to analogous isophorone-based triene crystals studied previously. The verbenone-based crystals show molecular conformation and crystal structure similar to the analogous isophorone-based crystals and therefore retain large macroscopic nonlin...
We present new stilbazolium salt DSTMS (4-N,N-dimethylamino-4′-N′-methyl-stilbazolium 2,4,6-trimethylbenzenesulfonate) with both high second-order nonlinear optical properties and very favorable crystal growth characteristics. We are able to obtain very large area bulk single crystals of more than 3 × 3 × 0.2 cm3 with a high optical quality without...
We present a simple method to measure the refractive index dispersion over a broad wavelength range (0.6-1.6 mu m). In a first step, the optical group indices are obtained by measuring the time-retardation of tunable 150 fs laser pulses within a sample relative to air. The refractive index dispersion is then calculated using a Sellmeier equation th...
In this presentation, we describe a more robust way to read out the degree of focusing of the probe pulse in terahertz-induced lensing and hence to detect the momentary field of the terahertz pulse. For this we use probe pulses at a wavelength lambda of 1.5 mum and a standard silicon photodiode. We show that the relative change of the photodiode si...
We present a comparative study of nonlinear optical materials for terahertz pulse generation by optical rectification and detection by electro-optic sampling, with the aim to find a material the is best suited for the use together with femtosecond lasers operating at a wavelength of 1.5 mum. Three crystals are identified that fulfill the condition...
Monomodal slab waveguides in lattice-matched epitaxial thin films of paraelectric potassium sodium tantalate niobate ( x ≈ 0.02 ) on paraelectric potassium tantalate substrates without surface polishing have been fabricated for the first time, to the best of our knowledge. A surface roughness of 21 nm (rms) has been measured by atomic force microsc...

The authors present a simple and robust method for the measurement of the terahertz-induced lensing effect that may be used for the coherent detection of few-cycle terahertz pulses. It is based on two-photon absorption of a 1.5 mu m probe pulse in a standard silicon photodiode. The change in the spatial probe pulse profile caused by terahertz-induc...
We present a simple method to correct for nonlinearities in the detection of terahertz (THz) transients by electro-optic sampling. The THz-induced phase shift of the optical probe beam is calibrated with an additional biasing phase from a variable wave plate. All the parameters that are needed for the determination of this phase shift can be direct...
A series of nonlinear optical chromophores based on configurationally locked polyene are synthesized, and the single crystal growth from the melt are investigated. The chromophores consist of a π-conjugated hexatriene bridge between the dialkylamino or methoxy electron donors and the dicyanomethylidene electron acceptor. The physical and nonlinear...
We report on the generation and detection of few-cycle THz pulses in the organic crystal DAST (4-N,N-dimethylamino-4’-N’-methyl stilbazolium tosylate) using the telecommunication wavelength 1.5 µm. A continuous spectrum from 1.3 to 4.8 THz was generated with a very high conversion efficiency (E THz,max ~50 kV/cm at an optical pump pulse energy of 2...
We demonstrate generation of few-cycle THz pulses through optical rectification in organic DAST crystals at telecommunication wavelength (1550 nm). An extremely high conversion efficiency is achieved through velocity-matching and the material's large nonlinear optical susceptibility.
We present a combined theoretical and experimental investigation of the generation of few-cycle terahertz (THz) pulses via the nonlinear effect of optical rectification and of their coherent detection via electro-optic sampling. The effects of dispersive velocity matching, absorption of the optical and the THz waves, crystal thickness, pulse diamet...
Short THz pulses are commonly generated through the optical rectification of ultrashort laser pulses in nonlinear crystals. We discuss the controllability of the THz spectrum emitted from the polar organic salt DAST (4-N,N-dimethylamino-4-N-methyl stilbazolium tosylate). The efficiency is not only dependent on different experimental parameters such...

Single crystals of 4-N,N-dimethylamino-4′-N′-methylstilbazolium p-methoxybenzenesulfonate (DSMOS) were successfully grown in methanol solution by slow cooling. X-ray studies revealed that DSMOS crystallized in the tric...
Few-cycle electromagnetic pulses with a spectral content between 0.1 and 10 THz (terahertz pulses) are commonly generated through the optical rectification of ultrashort laser pulses in nonlinear optical crystals. We describe how the THz spectrum emitted from the polar organic salt DAST (4-N,N-dimethylamino-4'-N'-methyl stilbazolium tosylate) can b...

Single crystals of 4-NN-dimethylamino-4'-N'-methylstilbazoliump-methoxybenzenesulfonate (DSMOS) were successfully grown in methanol solution by slow cooling. We demonstrate how ultrashort terahertz pulses are coherently measured in an organic birefringent crystal by terahertz-induced lensing. Velocity-matching schemes for several wavelengths of the optical source and probe light pulses are presented.
In this paper, we developed terahertz-induced lensing (TIL), a variation of electro-optic sampling that is not affected by birefringence.
Thin plates of highly nonlinear optical organic crystal DAST (4'-dimethylamino-N-methyl-4-stilbazolium tosylate) have been grown and prepared for THz generation experiments and integrated optics. The thickness is in the range of 20 microns to 1mm. DAST is an organic salt with one of the highest nonlinear optical susceptibilities and electro-optical...
We demonstrate terahertz-induced lensing TIL, the focusing and defocusing of an ultrashort ''probe'' laser pulse induced by a collinearly traveling terahertz pulse in an electro-optic crystal. The intensity change on the axis of the probe beam after the crystal is shown to be linear with the terahertz THz electric field and can thus be used to meas...
The spatial field distribution of a quasi single-cycle THz pulse leads to a time-dependent lens-like refractive index profile in an electro-optic crystal, which changes the beam shape of a copropagating optical probe pulse. We used this effect to measure THz waveforms in a highly birefringent crystal.
Short THz pulses can be generated via optical rectification in the organic salt DAST (4-N,N-dimethylamino-4′-N′-methyl stilbazolium tosylate) due to its large second-order nonlinear susceptibility d=1010 pm/V (at λ=1318 nm). The efficiency of THz generation is affected by absorption and dispersion caused by several resonances of the crystals in the...
