Educational policy in India has been exhorting teachers to adopt student-centered or learner-centered educational approaches in the classroom. However, these terms and expectations have not been defined clearly, often leaving a perceived gap between policy and practice. In order to address this gap, our study attempts to establish a concrete definition of student-centered or learner-centered education for K-10 schooling in India by exploring what school teachers and school leaders think about the construct. To this end, teachers and school leaders from six schools around Mumbai will be engaged in surveys, and follow up focus groups and personal interviews.
The following research questions directs our investigation into the efficacy of a phonics-based program implemented at a private ICSE School in India:
1. How did years of phonics instruction in preschool relate to reading outcomes for students in Kindergarten?
2. How did years of phonics instruction in preschool relate to the incidence of students identified as being at-risk for reading difficulties in Kindergarten?
