According to the World Health Organization, obesity disease currently represents one of the main public health problems since it can influence the duration and quality of life with a high social cost, and the body mass index, as the ratio of body mass and the height squared, is considered as the measure to define obesity. However, in patients with...
Electrical Impedance Tomography design can be simplified to obtain a low cost 16 electrodes edema monitoring clinical instrument by using voltage measurement multiplexing. Multiplexers introduce errors, which we have estimated by consecutive phantom measurements both using voltage multiplexers and by selecting the electrodes by hand, all other thin...
The aim of this research was to enable women after breast cancer surgery, in which arms lymphoedema often occurs, to self-monitor this disease using in-home an easy-to-use-device which assesses the arm’s resistance ratio, considered an indirect, non-invasive index of increased extracellular water volume in those limbs. An homemade equipment based o...
Bioimpedance Spectroscopy measurements and Cole-Cole models are commonly used to characterize biological systems. Cole-Cole model parameters may be obtained by fitting the measured bioimpedance data into a semicircle. This work proposes an iterative method to approximate a bioimpedance dataset to a Cole-Cole model analysis using only three points....
Plants comprise biological tissues where bioimpedance could be measured. Changes in values of these impedance parameters within tissues are the result of changes in the chemical composition of the sap, cellular depolarization, and ion transport in response to external stimuli such as water availability, diseases, and photosynthesis activity, among...
This contribution describes the state of the art in bioimpedance measurements through development boards to build portable devices that perform in-situ measurements and potential technological opportunities to separate the AD5933 integrated circuit from a PC. The presented research is based on prototypes developed with the aim of achieving portabil...
The most frequent prodromes of COVID-19 infection are fever, signs of respiratory diseases, cough and shortness of breath. Nevertheless, it is not infrequent that patients with COVID-19 also show cardiac symptoms. So, it is of importance to detect the prodromal symptoms of the COVID-19 infection in order to be able to make a diagnosis as quickly as...
A portable electrical impedance spectroscopy device was developed to monitor the bioimpedance resistive component of bovine meat by injecting a sinusoidal current of 1 mA at 65 kHz. Both right and left longissimus dorsi muscles were trimmed from 4 slaughtered cows. The left muscle portions were frozen to −18 °C for 7 days while the right ones were...
Three-dimensional simulations of peripheral, deep venous flow during muscular exercise in limbs of healthy subjects and in those with venous dysfunction were carried out by a computational fluid-dynamics (CFD) approach using the STAR CCM + platform. The aim was to assess the effects of valvular incompetence on the venous calf pump efficiency. The m...
To simulate a limb, two phantoms of bovine femurs (one with an intact bone and the other with a bone sawn in two) were constructed and non-invasive Electrical Impedance Spectroscopy measurements were taken on them in order to identify differences in their respective Cole Cole diagrams. Impedance spectroscopy was performed by a frequency sweep betwe...
The resistive component of bioimpedance was non invasively assessed in both right and left upper arms of 11 healthy female and 9 male subjects (28.4 ± 1.4 years; 63.8 ± 11.8 kg; 167.4 ± 7.5 cm) all of whom were right-handed. A homemade electrical impedance spectroscopy device which implemented the AD 5933 electronic board was utilized, and the bipo...
Four sets of 4 week-old Lactuca Sativa plants, each with 30 samples, were subjected to a nocturnal frost simulation by inserting them into an instrumented freezer with internal temperature maintained at a constant value of −2 °C. At time points of 60, 120, 180, 240 min, one after another lettuce sets were removed from the freezer to be tested with...
Bioimpedance measurements are used increasingly in health applications because bioelectric parameters have been associated with anatomical and physiological properties, thus enabling to distinguish medical conditions. For bone fracture diagnostics, nevertheless, there is no established non-invasive method. Ex vivo studies and In vivo bioimpedance p...
The resistive component of the bioimpedance was non invasively assessed in both right and left forearms of 11 healthy female and 9 males (28.4 +- 1.4 years; 63.8 +- 11.8 kg; 167.4 +- 7.5 cm) all of which were right-handed. A homemade electrical impedance spectroscopy device which implemented the AD 5933 electronic board from Analog Devices Inc., US...
The fracture of long bones is one of the pathologies of greater demand of systems of medical emergencies, the method used for the diagnosis, the radiology of X-rays, produces damages to the patients and to the hospitals environment. For these reasons, our group is studying the implementation of a new diagnostic technique for the detection of bone f...

The biological systems by which an arm is made (bone tissue, striated muscle, adipose in addition to the corresponding body
fluids)[1] constitute an anisotropic and heterogeneous medium[2,3]. The works of Gabriel et al.[4] provide experimental information on the
electrical properties (conductivity and permittivity) of all tissues that constitute a...
Electrical Impedance Tomography (EIT) tech- niques elaborate two dimensions images from average spatial distribution of resistivity within a three-dimensional structure. In the fracture and healing process of long bones, the limb has changes of bioimpedance values. This paper review varius works in bone electrical impedance and tomographic recon- s...
