How we measure 'reads'
A 'read' is counted each time someone views a publication summary (such as the title, abstract, and list of authors), clicks on a figure, or views or downloads the full-text. Learn more

Conference Paper
Full-text available
An experimental campaign giving a holistic overview on the hydro-mechanically coupled behavior of Opalinus Clay shale is presented. Oedometric swelling tests show a pronounced stress path-dependent swelling behavior that is governed by the local permeability and the mechanical pre-loading stress. A linear coupling between deformation and volumetric...
Article

The hydro-mechanical processes of a reconstituted clay shale (Opalinus Clay) were studied and implications for constitutive modelling of swellable clay shales derived. The study aims to provide further insights into these coupled processes. For that, oedometric swelling tests with varying boundary conditions and loading paths, oedometric compressio...
Conference Paper

This paper presents an extension of the Theory of Porous Media (TPM) for expansive soils. For this purpose, the pore water is divided into free water, which can flow through the pore space, and swelling water, which is bound to the solid by physico-chemical forces. The transition from free water to swelling water is controlled by a mass transfer fu...
Article

This paper presents a simple hypoplastic constitutive model that describes the essential features of the material behaviour of partially saturated clayey soils observed in oedometric compression tests. The model is formulated in terms of net stress and degree of saturation. The total strain rate is decomposed into a portion related to the changes i...

The testing of low-permeable materials is challenging. Yet, for the disposal of radioactive waste, it is essential, too. This workshop is aimed at gathering ambitious scientists to discuss and to collaborate on their experiences in the laboratory testing of low-permeable materials. The focus here is on the methods: What method is best for what kind...

The wetting-induced expansion of soils is a complex phenomenon. Its numerical description requires appropriate element formulations (balance equations) and constitutive models (stress-strain behavior, hydraulic conductivity). In the sense of a holistic approach, both appropriate element formulations and constitutive models are developed in this project.
