In XX century Italy abandonment is a widespread phenomenon. In the case of S. Paolo – a neighbourhood in the periphery of Ragusa Ibla, a UNESCO site in Sicily -, abandonment is linked to 1) the fragility of its geographical position; 2) the contraction of economic growth; 3) the lack of "modern" urban services. These three factors are interlinked a...
Understanding the effects of a metropolis' changes in scale - the rate of growth and its speed - rather than pursuing the search for optimal city size, is mandatory. The city of today copes with an on-going syntactic transformation. Our research question horizon, then, is the metropolitan extension: its management, its architectural dimension and landscapes. From a metabolic point of view, the growth needs a discontinuity in its structure that regulates the logic disposal of no longer sustainable elements. For...

The research investigates how, based on map readings of the metropolitan city and its hybrid urban-rural territories, it is possible to identify the spatial components that characterise the margins and borders of metropolitan hybrid landscapes/drosscapes (Berger, 2007).
Furthermore, this first consideration is followed by the need to experiment with new cartographic representation practices that can methodologically support the preliminary urban and architectural design phase of land projects (Secchi, 1986) in specific metropolitan contexts (Contin, Galiulo, 2020):
- The Hybrid Ground: the semi-spontaneous expansion near regional (urban-rural) road arteries;
- The Amorphous Ground: the hyper-planned land (Secchi, 1986:20);
- The Natural Ground: a porous space, a permeable and connected landscape in continuity with the ecological armature.
The research proposes the testing of the Metropolitan Cartography Methodology as a research tool for the analysis and interpretation of Hybrid Metropolitan Landscapes in specific Urban-Rural contexts to demonstrate how the cartographic tool is fundamental to decode the spatial dynamics of trans-scalar transformation of the Metropolitan Landscape.
