Introduction
My previous research focused on the detrimental effects of media on body image and unconscious psychological motives that underlie biased defensive reactions such as prejudice, victim-blaming and stigmatization. More recent work involves the promotion of social-emotional well-being (particularly within schools and with post-secondary students). Much of my work is applied and collaborative and involves supervising undergraduate student researchers working with community partners.

Rising perfectionism levels within post‐secondary students could be one reason for students' challenges with adaptation to post‐secondary. Recent research has suggested mindfulness‐based interventions may be a promising avenue for mitigating high perfectionism, in addition to improving emotional and social well‐being. The objective of this study wa...
This repeated-measures experiment explored the effects of six weeks of gratitude practice on college students (N = 67) on relationship satisfaction and perceived superiority. Replicating previous research on gratitude practice, it was hypothesized that after consistent gratitude practice, participants in the experimental group (n = 32) would feel i...

Achieving adequate physical activity is an important health goal that many elementary school students are not meeting during the school day. The physical activity leadership (PAL) Program was designed to provide individually tailored supports to improve the quantity and quality of physical activity in schools, as well as promote improvements in sel...
Social scientists appear to focus on negative beliefs about, and attitudes toward, gay men and lesbian women. This emphasis, though understandable in view of the widespread oppression of gay and lesbian individuals, is somewhat myopic because it ignores what might be referred to as the positive dimension of stereotypes. Although such a concept may...
Most research on sexually explicit material (SEM) uses a harm-based discourse, a central tenet of which is that pornographic media deleteriously affect male viewers' attitudes and behaviours toward women. Consequently, minimal attention has been directed toward examining associations between men's exposure to SEM and their self-perceptions in terms...
The current research summarizes three studies (Ns = 312, 584, and 176) examining genital perceptions among groups of Canadian post-secondary students. Results indicated that male participants evidenced consistently more favourable views of their genitalia in comparison to female participants. Men and women who were non-virgins (i.e., had engaged in...
The purpose of this study was to investigate variables-beyond those examined traditionally within a harms-based framework-that may be associated with exposure to sexually explicit material (SEM). These variables included: genital self-image, sexual anxiety, sexual esteem, perceived importance of engaging in safer sex practices, and perceived suscep...
