Introduction
I apply Operations Research methods to problems in healthcare with a special focus on tactical demand and capacity management for medical practices and dynamic appointment scheduling. My mainly used methods are stochastic integer linear programming, queueing theory, simulation and Markov-decision processes.

Data
The data set consists of parameters of distributions of perioperative surgical process durations in German hospitals subdivided by the level of care, the surgical specialty, patient type (in- or outpatient), and the procedure’s main OPS code. We consider the following processes: anesthesia induction time, anesthesia emergence time, surgical lead-in...

In March 2021, the pilot project “Vaccination in practices” started in 42 selected family practices in Baden-Württemberg. The 6-week project aimed to rapidly implement the COVID-19 vaccination in primary care. The practices were able to document the time spent per patient and vaccination in minutes, as well as the daily time spent on patient-indepe...

Thesis
This thesis on tactical demand and capacity management for medical practices consists of four main parts. In the first part, we analyze the general planning and control decisions that need to be taken by a practice manager when opening and then running a medical practice. We further present a best-case data set containing all relevant information o...
Article
This article focuses on balancing supply and demand for physicians and panel patients on a tactical level to ensure a manageable workload for the physician and access to care for patients. Patients are part of the physician’s panel if they visit the physician somewhat regularly. For the first time, we propose deterministic integer linear programs t...

This article focuses on balancing supply and demand for physicians and panel patients on a tactical level. Here, patients are part of the physician's panel if they visit the physician somewhat regularly. We propose a taxonomy of deterministic integer linear programs that decide on the intake of new patients into panels over time, taking into accoun...
Conference Paper
The admission process is the first part of a hospital stay for all in- and outpatients. For the hospital, it is a critical part as all the necessary data must be stored in the hospital information system and all legal documents have to be signed in order to guarantee the best possible treatment and efficient logistics. In this paper, we focus on th...

Energy systems based on renewable energy sources require increasing demand side flexibility. Also, changes in the underlying cost structure, i.e., decreasing variable costs and increasing infrastructure investments as well as varying consumer needs should be reflected in the setup of future markets, including retail markets and tariffs. While vario...

This chapter presents our innovative approach to teach Industrial Engineering and Management Master students how to apply Operations Research to health care problems. We, the Chair of Discrete Optimization and Logistics (DOL) at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology, offer the course “Operations Research in Health Care Management” where we give an...

Advance admission scheduling in the field of health care is an important and complex problem. Often, exact models of realistic size cannot be solved due to the curse of dimensionality and heuristics have to be used. In this paper we consider the appointment schedule of a physician's day. We assume patient types defined by different time preferences...

Indirect waiting times or access times of patients are an important indicator for the quality of care of a physician. Indirect waiting times are influenced by the panel size, i.e., the number of patients regularly visiting the physician. To study the nature of this influence we develop an M/D/1/K/N queueing model where we include no-shows and resch...

This textbook addresses the conceptual and practical aspects of the various phases of the lifecycle of service systems, ranging from service ideation, design, implementation, analysis, improvement and trading associated with service systems engineering. Written by leading experts in the field, this indispensable textbook will enable a new wave of f...

Introduction In most hospitals the operating rooms (OR) are separated from the rest of the hospital by transfer rooms where patients have to pass through for reasons of hygiene. In the OR transfer room patients are placed on the OR table before surgery and returned to the hospital bed after surgery. It could happen that the number of patients who n...
