Introduction
My research focuses on the effects of new communication technologies on human sociality, as well as questions of design and administration for such technologies. Lately I've explored the themes of community and affinity online, embodied knowledge in digital interaction, and life writing. I am particularly interested in hobbyist communities and accessibility for newcomers to specialised fields of interest such as wilderness activities or traditional music and dance. My research approach is participatory, qualitative and multi-method, with social action as the main focus, based on the principles of mediated discourse analysis and nexus analysis.

Open Diary was the first online diary service to be created, in existence from 1998 to 2014. An ethnographic case study was performed in 2006–2008 to explore community-creation on the site, using the theory of sense of virtual community (Blanchard & Markus, 2002, 2004) to analyse site practices and the member experience. The study describes a cohes...

The developers wished to motivate participation by the addition of a communal chat space to engender a sense of community on the site. The analysis shows that...

This article discusses the meaning and function of “community” as a discourse on the image-sharing website Imgur. The analysis shows that the community term has many meanings and serves as a shorthand for a wide variety of social practices, and these meanings are shaped by the experiences of social action leading to the use of the term. Based on et...

This paper provides a multidisciplinary take on how participation and agency may be enhanced through participatory design and decision-making methods in a relatively established but nevertheless mutable and variable community, in a university environment. The paper reports on an ongoing project in which research on various aspects of community is c...
