Introduction
I am a PhD student in University of Latvia and my dissertation topic is "Borderland customs: a case-study in south-east Latvia". By focusing on local Roman Catholic vernacular practices observed and fixed during regular fieldwork, I compare them with historical records (ethnography, folklore, etc.) and put in a wider context of the peripheral border area, where one of the main characteristics is the downshift of the number of its multi-confessional inhabitants.

Border studies’ scholars have unequivocally revealed that the dynamics found in the border areas represent both the relations between the neighboring countries as the nature itself of the sovereignties. V. Konrad (2015, 5) argues that "they [borderland residents] inhabit transition space where they witness borders in motion, and they confront, nego...

During fieldwork in September 2018 in Indra, a Latvian village situated seven kilometres from the Belarus border, its inhabitants were interviewed upon the local traditions. The coding of these interview transcripts and such data as local archives or newspapers reveal to what extent (1) referencing to the past is important while evaluating and just...

House names in Latvia is a widespread phenomenon, which can be historically traced back to the 15th century. Latvian Land Reform of 1990 (PZR 1990) required naming each house in rural area thus promoting the traditional lifestyle and institutionalizing a common practice. Article’s focus is the house naming system in a broader context in Grāveri par...
