Introduction
Angelo Figliola has recently completed his PhD research at University “La Sapienza”, Rome; during the PhD he has been a visiting researcher at IAAC, University for Advanced Architecture of Catalunya, working on Robotic fabrication applied to wood structures. He holds a Masters Degree in Architecture, 2012,from the University of Camerino, School of Architecture and Design. In 2013 he was awarded a post-graduate II level Masters in Housing from the University of Roma 3.

Among these, the AEC sector has also begun to accept the challenges dictated by the 4.0 paradigm, continuing that path of hybridisation with other disciplinary fields and industrial sectors (aerospace, naval, automotive) that characterised the first digital era. The 4.0 challenge leads industry operators to introduce a series of new paradigms that affect the entire supply chain, from first-level training courses to the creation of innovative companies, passing through the design and construction of digital and performative architectures. The affirmation of computational design, the increasingly transversal and multidisciplinary flow of knowledge, the democratization of machines open up new possibilities in a historical moment where the combination of technological innovation and design can play an important role in terms of environmental sustainability and reduced consumption of resources. The development of CAD / CAM and robotics digital manufacturing technologies has helped to reduce the gap produced by the increase in computational power in the generation of the form compared to the materialization of the same. Through this process, architecture regains its own tectonic identity and the architect of a material sensitivity previously dissolved in virtual space. The democratization of digital manufacturing tools and the growing ubiquity of computational design requires a new material dimension and a new figure capable of controlling the entire process. In the post-digital era, where the essence of design lies in the control and information of the process that holistically involves all the aspects mentioned above, rather than in formal research, it is necessary to understand technologies and analyze the advantages that it can bring in terms of environmental sustainability and product innovation. This book intends to systematize from a theoretical and practical point of view, the best contributions and the best experiences in the professional and entrepreneurial, academic and research fields in relation to architecture and design based on this new design paradigm. The main purpose of the proposed systematization is to create a widespread awareness necessary to initiate technology transfer processes involving the public sector, universities and research centers, and the private sector consisting of innovative companies.

The 2.5-year programme builds on the success of the Digital Cities Challenge, which helped 41 EU cities develop a strategic vision and roadmap for their digital transformations. Participating ICC cities are eager to become the engines for the recovery of the economy, create new business opportunities and enhance their cities, industries and SMEs’ sustainability and resilience through the uptake of advanced technologies, re-skilling and upskilling of the workforce.
