Project
Identify technical, tactical and strategic performance factors in elite football
Project
The proposed project follows on from nine successive National Plan for Scientific and Technical Research and Innovation projects we have participated in since 1980. During this time, we have reached many milestones, but much remains to be done considering the burgeoning of the observational methodology approach, the opportunities presented by new technologies, the potential that remains to be exploited, and the firm dedication of a team ready to embrace the challenges that lie ahead. The journey undertaken by our research group has been driven by a search for conceptual, methodological, and technological excellence within observational methodology, which time after time has proven to be an extremely useful tool for researching the phenomena underlying sport and physical activity. With this new project, we aim to give a new impetus to the development of methodological and technological procedures embracing multiple substantive aspects of the field of sport. Our overall goal, which is formed by three specific objectives, is to tap into the full potential of observational methodology to analyze the behavior of people and groups in sports and physical activity programs. The first objective is to study forms of play and participation in different sports and physical activities from an approach based on conceptual and empirical innovation and an interdisciplinary perspective combining sport and psychology. The second objective is to study how community-level sports and physical activity programs impact health and contribute to a healthier lifestyle, as studies from around the world have provided clear evidence that the adequate practice of sport and exercise favors a healthy lifestyle. Also, in line with the work that has consolidated the position of our research group over more than three decades, we will continue to seek and implement methodological advances, as we consider this to be a necessary step to achieve the first two objectives of the study. Our third objective, thus, will focus on improving and fine-tuning the procedures employed in observational methodology—which is gaining increasing recognition as a promising approach for the non-intrusive investigation of both behaviors (direct observation) and messages embedded in documentary material (indirect observation)—and on developing sophisticated technological tools to harness its full potential. We will seek conceptual, methodological, and technological innovations that will strengthen the theoretical and practical application of observational methodology (first proposed by our group 15 years ago). We will also continue to advocate and demonstrate, through rigorous research and the development of methodological innovations, the importance of integrating direct and indirect observation designs within a novel mixed-methods approach rooted in the convergence of qualitative and quantitative methodologies. The 19 members of the research team behind this project, together with 24 members of work team, constitute a critical mass of researchers (from 17 universities and 4 countries) with an interdisciplinary background who offer the necessary skills and experience to ensure the success of the objectives contemplated in this new project designed to shed light on how participation in sport and physical activity at the community level impacts healthy lifestyles.
