Introduction
I work on multidisciplinary projects to preserve resources and habitat for society and nature. My focus is on finding solutions for biosystems challenges that require combinations of Engineering, Environmental, and Socioeconomic approaches. I also advocate to democratize scientific knowledge by developing low-cost devices for environmental monitoring and by promoting STEM K-12 education. Hablo español. Falo português.

Low-income, rural frontline communities of California's Central Valley experience environmental and socioeconomic injustice, water insecurity, extremely poor air quality, and lack of fundamental infrastructure (sewage, green areas, health services), which makes them less resilient. Many communities depend financially on agriculture, while water sca...

Frequent and prolonged droughts challenge groundwater sustainability in California but managing aquifer recharge can help to partially offset groundwater overdraft. Here, we use managed aquifer recharge (MAR) to examine potential benefits of adding an artificial recharge facility downstream from California's Lower American River Basin, in part to p...

Low-income, rural frontline communities of California’s Central Valley experience environmental and socioeconomic injustice that makes them less resilient, including lack of fundamental infrastructure (sewage, green areas, health services), water insecurity, and the lowest air quality in the United States. These communities often depend financially...

Frontline communities of California experience disproportionate social, economic, and environmental injustices, and climate change is exacerbating the root causes of inequity in those areas. Yet, climate adaptation and mitigation strategies often fail to meaningfully address the experience of frontline community stakeholders. Here, we present three...

A common approach in scientific research and policy is a commitment to develop projects or legislation trying to improve problems experienced by low-income and rural communities; however, lack of interaction with community members during the process tends to produce unsatisfactory results. We visited disadvantaged communities in the San Joaquin Val...

Frontline communities experience social, economic, and environmental injustices, and climate change is exacerbating the root causes of injustice in those areas. Yet, climate adaptation and mitigation strategies often fail to meaningfully address the experience of frontline community stakeholders. Here, we present three challenges, three errors, and...

There is a surge of interest in reaching social and environmental justice in California's disadvantaged communities by governments, non-governmental organizations, and academia. However, actions taken so far are insufficient to reduce those inequities substantially. We propose the lack of effective policies and relevant scientific work results in p...

This guide equips San Joaquin Valley (SJV) community members and advocates with information and ideas to address the rapidly evolving climate change issues affecting community members’ health and to prepare for climate challenges. You will find information about climate impacts on water and agriculture and about socioeconomic issues across cities...

Soil CO2 concentrations and emissions from tropical forests are modulated seasonally by precipitation. However, sub‐seasonal responses to meteorological events (for example, storms, drought) are less well‐known. Here we present the effects of meteorological variability on short‐term (hours to months) dynamics of soil CO2 concentrations and emission...

Groundwater is a common pool resource that supports agriculture, human communities, and the environment. Public participation in common pool resource management can be affected by media representation and perceptions of identity as a stakeholder. Newspaper media has an outsized influence on framing subject matter, expertise, organizations, and who...

Leaf-cutter ant nests are biogeochemical hot spots where ants live and import vegetation to grow fungus. Metabolic activity and (in wet tropical forests) soil gas flux to the nest may result in high nest CO2 concentrations if not adequately ventilated. Wind-driven ventilation mitigates high CO2 concentrations in grasslands, but little is known abou...

1.Leaf‐cutter ants are a prominent feature in Neotropical ecosystems but a comprehensive assessment of their effects on ecosystem functions is lacking. We reviewed the literature and used our own recent findings to identify knowledge gaps and develop a framework to quantify the effects of leaf‐cutter ants on ecosystem processes. 2.Leaf‐cutter ant...

Leaf‐cutter ants are dominant herbivores that disturb the soil and create biogeochemical hot spots. We studied how leaf‐cutter ant Atta cephalotes impacts soil CO2 dynamics in a wet Neotropical forest. We measured soil CO2 concentration monthly over 2.5 years at multiple depths in non‐nest and nest soils (some of which were abandoned during the stu...

There is no perfect ordinal decision-making method. This means, one ordinal method cannot meet the five Arrow Axioms (independence of irrelevant alternatives, transitivity, universality, Pareto unanimity and total order). For this reason, researchers have been focusing their efforts on finding methods that reduce the influence of irrelevant alterna...

Floods are common in the upper Uruguay River, and they may occur almost at any moment, because there are not defined rainfall seasonal patterns. Moreover, there is not an official model for flood forecasting in this basin. This study developed a methodology for 1-month flood forecasting in the upper region of the Uruguay River basin (C3000 m3 s-1),...

The experiments performed in this study consisted of 16 batch reactors fed different mixtures of landfill leachate combined with synthetic wastewater treated using the Powdered Activated Carbon Treatment (PACT) process. The objective was to measure the COD mass removal per liter each day for each reactor using two models: the first model combined t...
