In this contribution I revise the changes that have been put in place for phasing out Asperger's syndrome based on the DSM-5 and question its implication to individuals with Asperger’s in terms of their disability identity and positionality as the Other in autism spectrum disorder. Moreover, recent backlash against the eponym of Asperger's syndrome...
This presentation discusses international students’ resilience in pursuing academic and learning goals in an English as a second language (ESL) classroom at a university level. Despite existence of a robust literature about motivation and goal-setting tasks in second language acquisition research, there is not much literature available about learne...
This presentation aims to explore the vernacularisation of brain technology, in the shape of ‘brain wearables’ as personal devices used by healthy individuals in their everyday. I will examine some marketing material from some companies’ websites that introduce brain wearables to an online lay-audience and prospective consumers through a dialogical...
International Student Mobility (ISM) has been one of the main trends of globalization in the 21st century landscapes. Yet, the International University Mobility is not a homogeneous movement. Although the majority of the international university students participate in structured exchange programs such as the European initiative known as Erasmus, t...
This poster proposes a pedagogy of vernacular neuroscience in general education courses through life writing narratives of individuals with neurological conditions (e.g. autism, epilepsy, cerebral palsy and stroke). It takes a case study approach by examining the pedagogical implications of the vernacularization of the neuroscience in ‘neuro-autobi...
This presentation aims to explore complexity theories as a potential humanities concept to comparative literature studies as it offers elements to understand the dynamic interactions and intra-actions among agents. For the past few decades, comparative literature research has shown more inclusivity concerning its object of study and media platforms...
This presentation aims to explore the autobiographical genre under the lenses of an emergent interdisciplinary methodology known as ‘complexity theory’ (Waldrop 1992; Jörg 2011; Wells 2013) in order to provide new insights into non-linear interactions between an autobiographical ‘self’ and its environment.
The autobiographical genre gained propuls...
Summary: Canadian Higher Education tends to embrace diversity and multiculturalism in a wide scope of their pedagogical services and communities. In the case of universities, International Teaching Assistants (ITAs) highlight the tones of the campus diversity, as they share their culture and language with their advisors, course directors, and above...
Our session will focus on the attitudes of instructors teaching in online educational spaces. Our research has revealed that instructors have anxieties toward designing online courses and teaching online. These anxieties are fueled by an overall lack of experience in designing and teaching online courses. Providing answers to some of the questions...
This presentation is part of a chapter from my dissertation in progress, in which I examine the vernacularization of neuroscience as a 21st century socio-cultural phenomenon. Here, I explore some ethical issues concerning an online commercial advertising of a brain device enhancement through a dialogic language methodology.
The so called ‘neurorev...
This presentation explores how individuals with brain injury such as cerebral palsy translate the medical discourse into vernacular – that is, into their ‘own’ language – to describe their lived experience. In this sense, this work draws upon examples from a current famous British stand-up comedian and social activist, Francesca Martinez, who has c...
Researchers have shown that medical students have a tendency to display negative attitudes towards patients with cerebral palsy (CP) due to limited knowledge or misunderstandings about the neurological condition (Martin et al 2005). These negative attitudes may lead to poor compassion and caring in the interactions with patients with CP, which put...
Increase in life-expectancy and a fear of an Alzheimer’s epidemic have become a global health concern. Although the high incidence of the disease is still observed in the North-South divide, less industrialized countries’ lower incidences can be debatable since population’s awareness of the disease is usually more limited. Hence, this presentation...
This presentation reflects on the pragmatics of silence within human interactions
mediated by computer (Facilitated Communication - FC) among autistics and non-autistics in
public contexts. Despite controversial debates regarding the use of FC, the augmentative
communication can help high-functioning autistic individuals to ‘break the silence’. Yet...
This article examines how a radical women's group, known as FEMEN, translate themselves in the public sphere, and what rhetorical elements they use to draw media's attention. In other words, this study questions to what extent a radical women's group can disarticulate mainstream discourses by exposing naked chests and holding scandalous street prot...
Abstract
This article examines how speakers negotiate contested identities in mediatised interviews for biographical documentary films. In order to understand the complex integration of participants’ speaking abilities (i.e. competence-in-performance) and cinematic technology (i.e. sound, image, movement) to construct cultural identity of the ‘Oth...
These impressions here are those of a junior researcher whose gaze comes ‘from below.’ In other words, it is a doctoral student’s autobiographical account of her academic trajectory from Brazil to Canada, and it asks to be understood as an analogy of the current status of Comparative Canadian Literature.
When I think back to being a graduate studen...
